I used to wear ass pads. I forgot to wear them one time and felt so liberated and haven't worn them since. Not sure why you'd need knee pads unless you plan on doing knee grinds.
Just a helmet for me...but I think other padding could help with confidence if you're learning new tricks on rails etc - especially urban rails...wouldn't fancy kneecapping the corner of the steps if you fall
I had a patella realignment on my right leg a couple of years ago so i got some thin protec ones that go under my ski pants. You can't even tell I'm wearing them and they keen your knees warm. They were only about $20 online. I say go for it....you have nothing to lose.
Most people around here wear spine protectors. Some, like me, have impact shorts to prevent small bruices, from falling on your sides, becoming a big problem.
I've always worn a helmet and next year i decided to buy a spine protector because a friend of mine landed backseat on a jump and was in a wheelchair all spring.
