NBC rant.

Alright, so we don't have cable at our place (mostly because we don't watch enough regular TV to really bother), so we end up watching movies on hulu/netflix, and most sports on ESPN's online stuff, or Fox and CBS's online stuff etc... (all three offer free sports streams) They all throw a few paid commercials in there, and probably make a killing for showing sports streams online this way.

But NBC get's the olympics, and requires you to have a cable TV subscriber to watch streams online... Why on earth would you watch the olympics online, if you already have cable or satellite TV... Riddle me this, NBC... because it's just silly lol.

I've been watching some online because I like to watch the events live, rather than hearing about the results, hours before NBC shows it on primetime.

That is especially annoying...

They push everything back to prime time TV, and then before each event, they spoil the whole thing telling you who won! WHAT THE FUCK?! Do they really want to just make you cover your ears ever 20 minutes?

They did the same thing back in Vancouver too. Fucking olympics were IN MY TIME ZONE for the first time EVER IN MY LIFE and I had to wait 4 hours to watch the events? WHAT?

The reason is that there's something like 300 events, making it impossible to televise them all. There's some overlap in the coverage (you can stream live events that will be televised later that day in primetime for example). The online coverage isn't a simulcast (well there are simulcasts of what's showing on NBC, MSNBC, Bravo, but that's not the main point) but rather supplemental and additional coverage for fans of more obscure sports that don't get slotted in on tv.

My real gripe is with the quality of the stream. It's a fucking joke, and who did they entrust with the video? Motherfucking Youtube. Yes, really. It fucking sucks and the ads suck. When you watch a popular event (like yesterdays phelps and locthe showdown) it is incredibly choppy, and when you refresh hoping it'll be better, you have to watch another 30 second ad, missing whatever you wanted to see as a result.

Good idea to offer up everything for viewing, shitty execution.

Yeah, the spoiler thing is fucking inexcusable. Even on their own fucking networks! You can avoid spoilers all day, but tune in 30 seconds too soon and your slapped with the results. Total botch job. AND, the decision making about what gets shown live vs. what gets bumped to primetime is fucking silly. How can you not show gold medal events live? Espcecially shit like swimming. fuck.

Meanwhile CBS's coverage of March Madness (and other events they show live) is FREE and for the most part flawless... like, I plugged in my computer to a 40" HDTV and it looked pretty dang good. Slightly soft, but still better than anything SD...

ESPN's online network is pretty decent and extremely extensive, and fox's online stuff isn't much worse.

NBC however, doesn't seem to understand how to do anything right but a few sitcoms and latenight shows... all of which only do well because they have SNL writers or are rip offs of british comedies.

NBC could do good by providing the olympic coverage for a low price. Say $10 USD for streaming, highlights, and full length events on a website for just the Olympics. Give you a complementary bottle opener or some shitty sway that says LONDON 2012 and the web coverage for $20. They would make some quick cash and set a good standard for this type of shit

See, if they offered good quality online streaming of all the events, i'd gladly pay 10$ to see it. That's the cost of going out to see a movie that lasts 2 weeks, and shows footage from the UK - which is pretty dang cool.
