05 Subaru WRX

Right now I drive a lame 87 honda prelude, yet it only has like 96k miles and the interior is plush, although its time to move on an upgrade.

My Uncle is selling an 05 sub, wrx, with 87k miles, manual tran, 5 speed, its clean aka stock except upgraded exhaust. My question is would it be worth paying low 9s for this car?. I want it to be fast, but I dont wanna look like a jackass having a wrx and not an sti...

What mods could I do to make it faster? thanks for serious feeback

inb4 flames add 5 hp.

i think low 9gs would be fair. im no expert on tuning cars or anything but i am pretty sure there are many many mods for it. for example toss in a cold air intake. get a nice set of new tires to start off with. lower it an inch or two it will improve the handling. or get a larger turbo and a ecu tune. just some ideas.

people hate on wrx lately live my 03, bought it senioir year of college i thing, couldnt get any other car for under 7500 with 69k, super clean, hatchback, awd, descent power, descent space

for 11k maybe even 9 you could pick up a sti. Just think about what you're gonna be using it for.

Wrx-Much more comfortable and capable for ALL conditions.

Sti-Much sportier and less capable for all terrain due to its height

If you just want a faster car get the sti, the tuning capabilities are much better

take that 9g's, sell your car and take that money and buy something that is actually decently reliable. Who honestly cares about having a "fast" sporty car. I would much rather have something suitable for everyday driving that isnt going to rape me on gas (unless you can afford it), and have insurance out the asshole.

I just traded in my 06 STI for $21,000.  If you can pick up an 04 or 05 for $9,000-$11,000 chances are it is going to be very high mileage and not in the best condition.  Most likely it will be in absolutely terrible condition.  KBB on an 05 WRX is $10,000-$12,000 so $9,000 is a good deal.

OP, don't be worried that is is not an STI.  Having spent a great amount of time in both an STI and a WRX, the only differences you will notice in the WRX is a softer ride, a quieter exhaust, and a quieter intake if you decide to get one.  The brakes will be worse also, but this won't be very noticeable unless you take it to a track.  If I was to get a new Subaru, I would probably opt for the WRX over the STI and spend the extra money on the limited version. 

If you want some bolt on upgrades that will make the car more fun to drive, obviously you can get a cat-back exhaust and an air intake.  Also, a short throw shifter in my opinion is well worth the $130 and is a super easy install.  If you decide you do want it to handle a bit better you can throw some coil overs on it.  

You can also find STI parts on craigslist and ebay for very cheap that will fit the WRX.  One of my friends put an STI turbo, intercooler, suspension, and wheels on his Forester for about $1200.  Just debadge it, and most people won't know the difference.

9's is a solid deal. I bought an 04 WRX a few months ago and spun a rod bearing within weeks, thousands of dollars later it still isn't fixed. They're great cars when they aren't broken, I'll say that. I was on a Cobb Stage 2 93 octane tune with a turboback as my only upgrade and was around 285 at the crank, which is enough for it to be pretty fun to drive. As for a used STi.. just no. The chances of you finding one that hasn't been beaten to hell or had at least one engine swap are slim to none. However if this WRX is your uncles car and the exhaust is the only upgrade (assuming it's a catback) I would definitely go for it. If you do decide to go with an aftermarket downpipe and go stage 2 just know that you are risking it with your reliability.

I'm going to check it out tomorrow, he repairs cars an sells them but this was a supposid flood car but he said its all clean and he wouldn't dick he would repair it or whatever If it fucks up but I'm gonna go check it out / learn to drive stick tomorrow but any tips? I think I need/ want wheels as it is purely stock so idk any help is appreciated

Honestly, I don't want to judge too much or have the wrong assumption but you sound young. This isn't the problem but right now it sounds like you have a good running car that will get you every with only 97xxx miles! Your car is cheap to repair and maintain so whats the problem, its old and you want a upgrade?
If your under 21, save your money for school and savings. You'll appreciate a nicer car when your older too, if you haven't learned to drive stick. You can still buy a upgrade car, but maybe not a wrx. You can look at buying a regular impreza (gasp), a lancer, or my god...maybe a civic. Just saying cars are nice and all, but there is more in your life than cars that it can go to.

I feel like it doesn't matter, STi or WRX, it depends on the specific car and owner. With STi's you have more mature owners simply because they cost more. And you might run into more aftermarket parts on a regular WRX. Or maybe more wrxes are bought as gifts over STi's and the young owners don't have the same pride of ownership and care. You're rolling the dice when you buy either one used without a warranty.

probably gonna do it... I sucked at driving it, but it hauls (compared to my old whip) and everything works/in good condition (knock on wood)

this. NASIOC is the shit when it comes to anything subaru. Whenever I have a question about my 02 rex I always look there and have never been let down.

If you do end up buying I shall say welcome to the cult. I say cult not club because you never leave a cult. once you go subaru you'll never go back....that is unless you can afford an EVO because the EVO is amazing.

Really? I don't know where you're looking, but around here it's rare to find one with an engine swap or that has been beaten to hell. People treat their STIs well because they're a hell of a lot more expensive then a WRX.
