Card Problems. Short out?

Pretty sure this is a lost cause, but who knows. Either way, it's interesting

8GB Kingston CF card.

Took about 400 photos or so on it today while hiking. all of a sudden I'm getting an ERR 02 on my LCD screen, and the camera won't turn on.

I take the card out, and the thing turns on as normal. Put it back in, back to the error. I'd have just reformatted the card if I could (reluctantly, since I had heaps of REALLY nice photos..), but the camera just wouldn't even read it.

So I stick it in my computer, and it doesn't really read the card. I go to Disk utility and the thing will read for 4 seconds and then not read for the next 10... repeating at similar intervals over and over again.

A: has anyone else had this happen? I have other cards I can use, but I'd like to recover the photos if possible - that said, if the computer can't read it, I likely won't be able to.

B: Would it be like.. say a short circuit or something? I have no damaged pins on the camera or anything.. and it works fine with another card, but it's just not reading for more than maybe 4-5 seconds.

I'm mostly curious so I'd know for the future (and to document that this kinda thing happens I suppose)

I've read similar things on CF card reviews, not necessarily with kensington but with CF cards in general, just generally degrading with time to the point where the camera or computer wont read them. With the new SD cards why are cameras still using CF cards?

Well, this is going on a bit older camera, and it actually only takes CF cards. I also feel like CF cards tend to write a bit faster on the camera and download faster onto the computer. Either way, both are not that different for the most part. Same flash memory base...

I had this happen before, with an older SD card though, I just had to keep taking it in and out hundreds of times before it finally read and then didn't move it at ALL.

This has happened to me recently with a 7 month old SD extreme card. still havent figured it it out. any suggestions? Camera says it isnt formatted and on the computer it wont format. Any suggestions?

Oh, yeah.. I got this card back in May I think, so there's absolutely no way it's very old. I've put a lot of shots through it (mostly because of timelapse work) but really, nothing it shouldn't be able to handle.

Oh well. Purchased 2 new fast 4gb cards from newegg with free shipping for under 20 bucks... so c'est la vie.
