Audi vs BMW help

I have some cash burning a hole in my pocket and I'm stuck between an Audi A4 1.8t and a BMW 325 XI. Both cars 2004 or 2005 and manual transmission. They're 2 totally different animals but I love them both and need some advice as to how each are for repair costs, performance, and overall vehicles. Thanks in advance for the help.

go audi, i have a 1.8t and absolutely love it, have had it for a year and so far no maintenance issues, one thing to look out for is the waterpump and timing belt which needs to be changed at i think 100k miles. but there is big tuning potencial for the a4, i just got the apr stage I tune and love it

Lol no. Can't really compare the two companies since they make completely different products. Audi generally beats BMW's comparable models (like an S4 compared to a 335i X-Drive), but BMW's product line consists of a shit ton of RWD cars whereas Audi only makes FWD and Quattro. I guess you could say that BMW's are more performance oriented, but they're also more expensive.

audi will most likely be easier and less costly to repair, have a cheaper insurance rate, and better gas mileage. the bmw will out perform the audi but the service on them can get pretty expensive

I picked up an e36 320i a couple weeks ago, and i'm loving it so far! People underestimate BMWs, i personally prefer them over audis.

have fun replacing the timing chain on the A4 at 75000 miles... the whole front end of the car has to come off to do it and itll cost you about $1750 for the repair. BMW on the other hand are similar but more DIY friendly. Pick up a bentley manual for the e46 platform and itll save you a ton. I use to have a 2002 325xi and loved it. When it hit 125k, i traded up to an E90, BMW FOR LIFE.

No, more like I'm finishing up 6 months of training for the Air Force and can afford it since the military covers your living expenses and gives you a pay check while training. So I'd say I somewhat earned every last penny. Tell me more about how I live off my Mommy (not momy) and Daddy.

In 08 I got a 2001 330xi. I traded it in a year ago with 140,000 miles and got a E82 135i. Such fun cars to drive. BMW ftw.

Yeah, thanks man. I'm really leaning towards a 2005 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro with 83,000 mi, but the reviews on line are scaring me with it being a pretty problematic car. Would you agree?

yes, any german car will have higher costs of ownership. People will try and say their a4 has been good to them and such but unless the car is brought to the dealership for a proper inspect it is very easy to miss things on inspections. As said earlier in the thread, timing belts are a major item that has a limited lifespan with a shitty waterpump on the 1.8t which is timing belt driven, so if the water pump fails you will need to remove the timing belt and such. a4's have a suspension system called quadralink suspension which has 4 balljoints per wheel which are all wearable items, that need replacement fairly often. a4's also destroy outer cv boots for some reason, the way the suspension is set up is very have on the cv boots of the car, which is 400ish bucks each time you need to replace a boot. Almost all bolts in the engine support or suspension aspects of AUDI are torque to yield bolts which mean they MUST be replaced each time they are removed which can bring up repair costs 200-300 bucks for fair size jobs. The 1.8t has problems with PVC systems as they are made of rubber and over time are eatten away by oil which is not a simple and easy repair, the pvc hose set is 300-400 bucks and takes a few hours to repair. Most a4's in older age start to have boost and vac leaks as well. the 1.8t does not like cold weather that much either, they can flood pretty easy when the battery is not in perfect cranking speed. one of the largest concerns with 1.8ts is oil sludge issues due to poor oil change records, this was such a large issue for a while that VAG had to release a warranty extension for all the owners of these cars because of the oil sludge issues, it was in court and VAG lost the case.

if you get an a4 that has been maintained proper and has been treated nice, they are an amazing car to drive for comfort and style... but they can be complete nightmares. If you are considering any german car... not only audi products...... MAKE SURE YOU HAVE AN INSPECTION AT THAT CAR'S DEALERSHIP BEFORE YOU COMMIT. My job is to find problems on cars, and if i have seen hundreds of the same cars with the same problems... i know where to look. Indy shops never have the same experience level and knowledge to properly inspect a certain chasis while looking for its known issues.

ah. going for the slow one. its a dog.. id look to get a step up in motor. I test drove an 04 1.8t and it felt like it took forever to get going and up to speed.

The Audi A4 is like a Honda Accord....but slower and more expensive. The A4 is an entry level "luxury" car meant for those who just want something with 4 rings on it. You should look at a nicer model or don't go there at all. The only thing worse is a 1 series BMW.

Hahahahaha I went to school for the air force for 6 months so much sacrifice. My Roommate matt has been in the army and spent 4 years in Iraq. He now goes to cmc and gets 2000$ of spending money a semester now that hes in school. im fine with that he served his time im happy my taxes go to him. you however stated you went to training for 6 months and at the end have enugh money for a used bmw i am a little up set we pay people that much for basic training even if you did miss a few holidays. im sure one day you will serve your time for this country and i thank you for that, but until then I don't think we should be paying you enough money to buy a used BMW or Audi just for training. And just for the record I'm not saying you should be getting paid but that seem like a little much. That being said I'm out of this thread enjoy your Audi

did you drive an automatic? because the 1.8t may not be a rocket, but i would't call it a dog. my chipped 1.8t is pretty speedy. maybe the one you drove had a dyeing turbo or serious boost leaks

You have to look at maintenance records for both cars. Have they continually had the recommended services at said intervals? Did owners follow synthetic oil and premium gas that these cars require? Both cars will be a nightmare if they were not taken care of. However if the previous owners were on top of the service intervals then the car shouldn't be a problem. Get the one that is more clearly cared for because both cars are going to be bomb

Try doing a little research before attempting to make a point. Everyone in basic training gets paid no more than $356 a week for a 18 hr a day 7 day a week job and thats for an E-3, not even E-1 (E-# is a "pay grade"), even making it a little educational for ya, ask your roommate, he can elaborate on it for you. That is a smashing $2.82/hr!! Not exactly BMW/Audi money.

This. the E82 135i creates 300hp stock with its straight 6 twin turbo engine. Its got the same engine is the 335 on a lighter and smaller frame. He may have been referring to the reliability though(?) since the N54 engine had a lot of fuel pump failures early on. I dont believe its so much of a problem now with the N55.

I dont own a BMW or Audi, but id like to put some input in here.


The new Audi's beat BMW in luxury all day long. Its not a night and day difference, but the interior of the NEWER Audi's are just simply better. I would imagine that Audi's would be a bit easier to maintain and fix when there are problems.

When it comes to BMW, you get a little bit of everything. Speed, luxury, and connivence. For example, the M5 is fast as fuck. A sedan with a 3.6 0-60? Unheard of. The M3 is also pretty damn fast.

I seem to like BMW better, but its just my opinion. I think Audi's are a little overpriced for what they do. Im not saying BMW is cheap either. The new R8 GT runs a 3.4 0-60, and im guessing a decently impressive top speed, but its also $200,000. I feel like thats a little steep for what it does. Hell, a GT500 Super Snake would beat that off the line, and in the top speed all day long, for ~$110,000 cheaper. Viper SRT10 and ZR1 are about the same as R8 and MUCH cheaper as well.



I know what OP is asking for is lower end BMW/Audi, but I just thought I would give my input. If you are going to be using this car to go skiing, get an Audi hatchback. I like the look of em.
