2011 macbook pro 15"
hi res antiglare display (not retina, but I love it, and I thinks its easier to see)
2.2 Ghz quad core i7
8gb of ram (going to 16 soon)
512mb Intel 3000 hd graphic and 1gb AMD radeon HD 6750M (switches between them so that you have more power when you need it, and more battery life when you are just doing regular stuff like ns)
500gb 7200 rpm hard drive (going to ssd after I do the ram)
and then I have a 2tb seagate go flex desk (getting thunderbolt cable for it eventually, likely after ssd)

would be nice to have a better laptop with more of a hard drive and better specs, especially for editing 3d text into video but it does the job, very slowly but still does it.

Just got a macbook pro
Newest and highest model, left damage of $4,000. Thats with a student discount plus 3yr warranty.
has an i7, 16gb ram, 750 gb solid state drive, and a retina display screen 2880x1800

Its a power house.

Im a 3d animator, so its mainly used for Maya, but I use zbrush, mari, and the adobe master collection. Overall runs pretty smooth, only 2 things I would change, are add some more ram up to 32GB, and change the graphics card, to a Quadro.

I bought mine off of amazon, but it was brand name. look around at reviews, you want to make sure you get the right speed (1333mhz i believe). Crucial has a ram checker app that will tell you what to buy, and there are plenty of sites specializing in mac ram. also, if you can use a screw driver and have ever used legos, you can install ram. the hardest part is convincing yourself to open up your precocious macbook.

I'd shoot for 16gb if I were you, unless you're on a major budget. 8gb is like 45 bucks and 16gb is about 150 bucks. I'm considering an upgrade to 16gb when I have some extra cash, definitely helps out and its so fucking cheap now. I remember I upgraded my MBP from 2007 from 2gb to 3gb (cause mine was the OG intel so i could only do 3gb) and going from 2x1gb sticks to 1x2gb and 1x1gb. I think the 2gb stick cost like 90 bucks or something, now 2x4gb is 45, its insane.

Just fine, convert everything to prores LT and edit in fcp, exporting can take longer cause its all 1080p60 but other than that, works well. I haven't had any problems yet, I only say I wish I had 16gb of ram cause AE is a ram whore.

I have the base model MBP retina. My old macbook just died. I plan to try and get ubuntu up and running when I have time but must say besides a few stupid changes, I really do like mountain lion.

A lot of apps I use though look pretty ugly on the retina screen.
