You'll never use them to hit rails, so you can keep the edges much sharper than your everyday park skis. Similarly for the bases, no rails = smoother bases = more speed. You might also choose a stiffer ski than you would otherwise, if you normally ride soft skis in the park.
For one, you want a fast, black base. You want sharp sharp edges and an edge / base bevel if you like it. I ride 2 and 2, some people prefer other bevels. Stiffness is another preference, Dorey and Riddle probably ride the stiffest skis ever. I prefer a little on the stiffer side, but still manageable. And as for a recommendation for skis, Pipe Cleaners all the way. Best ski I have ever ridden.
Sorry for the double post, but if you want to legitimately ski pipe and compete in it, yes it is a big must to have pipe skis that never touch rocks, rails, and use ski straps whenever they're not on snow.
