Boundary Waters

Just got back from an awesome trip there. It had to be cut short due to an injury in the group but oh well. anyone else been there a lot/ever?

I was there a couple summers ago with some relatives. It was pretty awesome, the scenery was amazing. But it was cut short for us too because the fishing was terrible and we were running out the food that we brought with. What area did you go into?

Oh there's tons to do. You can canoe, swim, throw people into the water, jump off cliffs (yes there some islands with cliffs), fuck with bears, I mean the sky is the limit man

i live in minnesota and lots of people go there. they all seem to enjoy it. you really cant beat minnesota in the summer, whether you're swimming, fishing, hiking, boating, or cliff jumping

I don't know if this is too specific but I entered at Mudro and went up to Lower Basswood falls right on the Canadian border. we went up a bit further but then our group mate nearly broke his back. The days of the week lakes. right in the smack middle of BWCA.

To do:
canoe, kayak, look at scenery, cliff jump, fish, hunt (dumb to do up there) watch for wildlife, relax, have fun.

Sweet, we went through basswood also. We wanted to go to Agnes lake but ended up only going through Sunday lake and Burke lake. There was an island on Burke with some sick cliff jumping!

boundry waters = nature. There is a lot of nature in the US.

I never understood why Minnesotans got so worked up about the Boundry Waters (I'm from Minnesota). Seriously. Yosemite, Yellowstone, Glacier National Park, Bryce Canyon, Moab, and a ton of other places... Yet peeps from Minnesota get so stoked they can go canoeing between Minnesota and Canada.

I'm stoked for you, but you will soon learn there are thousands of bad ass places that sound way more bad ass than kayaking over the border.

"Holy fuck guys, I went kayaking in thailand while fucking a prostitute!," now doesn't that sound cooler than, "hey guys, I walked around with a kayak on my head for 8 hours then kayaked a bit on the Minnesota/Canada border, don't cha know?"

I spent a lot of time in the Boundary Waters when I still lived in MN. We put in at Mudro a lot too, is the Chainsaw Sisters Saloon still around?? I lived in Rochester and would head north to get away and fish as much as I possibly could. Northern MN is one of the best places on earth, those who don't have experience will never know what they're missing.

I love it up there, but I do know of one other place that I would much rather be than the Boundary Waters for northern MN enjoyment. Of course I can't tell anyone where this is, but it's in northern MN and has more northern pike in a single, small lake than I've ever known of in my life. It's literally a pike fisherman's wet dream; tons of fish and NO people.

MN represent (even though I now live in WA)

By the way, Alaska's mosquitos make Minnesota's seem like nothing...

This. Now granted places like Yellowstone are absolutely breathtaking but there's tons of people around. You can't really 'get away' at those places. The boundary waters offer nearly total isolation. You don't deal with very many people there and you have the freedom to go anywhere and everywhere. Also if you want to go into the boundary waters you have to basically earn it. Places such as Yellowstone you can just drive in and hike around and see the main sites whereas the boundary waters there are no roads and you have to carry everything in. I guess people have a greater appreciation for it cuz you have to work for it.

Nearly everyone I did happen to encounter in my many trips to the Boundary Waters were inconsiderate assholes that did not deserve to be up there. We had a troop of Boy Scouts try and poach our swimming rock/beach one time we were cooking breakfast. We were cooking breakfast on the rock right at the waters edge when their 3 canoes paddled up to us. They were so offended when we asked them nicely to move along to their own campsite. It's a controlled and extremely isolated park, you can only enter on your designated day, and must vacate the park on the expiration date on your permit. Why the fuck do I want to be around anyone else when I'm up there? I can't believe how stupid some people are...

Go up there 3 times a year. Pobah and Sturgeon are my main lakes. Got this one in Sturgeon last year.

those are so popular. It's been stated that you can just drive into those parks and you actually have to work for BWCA. yes you can be in the wilderness in those places but BWCA is different. It is literally all forest, lakes and rocks. it's also attached to Quetico, the canadian counterpart to BWCA, so to speak (it's a national park) that makes it so much bigger - a massive chunk of wilderness. people don't just go up there to sit on the border. BWCA is like no other.

No, not in the arrowhead...

I won't be telling anyone that already doesn't know. It's that good. 12 days of non-stop fishing between 2 people, we caught 124 pike over 3 lbs+. It was definitely a good trip. Motorboats aren't allowed unless you are willing to carry them to the entrance, even then it doesn't guarantee you will get the boat all the way into the lake. Not to mention the overall lack of knowledge of the location and the limited camping spots (3 total) it is literally heaven for a pike fisherman such as myself.

Sorry to hear that. We never dealt with any rude people up there. Everyone we came across stayed to themselves. But the deeper you go into Canada the less and less people there are which is nice. On a side note, we were told by a guide at an outfitter shop that a person had gone into the boundary waters before 9/11 happened and then came back out after it did and was shocked to find out the U. S. had been attacked. I found that to be crazy to think about.

Ummmmm and everywhere is like this?

The "Boundary Waters" is a relatively small area. I mean, it's beautiful. I've been there. But I was in like 6th grade and it really wasn't THAT hard to earn it.

So much of the US is hard to get to. I don't understand all they hype about the boundry waters. It's just like every other lake/forest area I've been too, but farther away from mountains or desert. Maybe that's the charm. Ooooooo lots of lakes and forest far enough away from big hills are mountains that it's just flat and awesome.

I suppose the one redeeming factor is that the boundary waters area is part of the Canadian Shield(oldest part of the north american craton) and therefor you can find rocks that are around 4.2 billion years old. So yeah, thats pretty fucking bad ass, but if you don't care about geology, there are much cooler looking places than the woods.


So yeah, geologically, Northern Minnesota is fucking bad ass and way cooler than the rest of the US (excluding the part of Canada that is part of the same craton) But, most people don't give a fuck about that, so yeah, go to Moab.

Maybe it was the lack of challenging portages on your trip, or not having much responsibility in regards to carrying group gear, or packs and canoe, but there are areas that definitely ARE hard to earn access to.

Regardless, the Boundary Waters is an area that is definitely beautiful and not to be taken for granted, but there are for certain other places that offer the same kind of solitude with more breathtaking surroundings.

after I finished high school a couple friends and I went up for a couple nights. the first day we got there we put in around 6 or 7 pm which is pretty late. we had one portage to do before we were on the lake where we wanted to camp. well it was getting dark and it looked like all the camp sites were raining and we were all tired from canoing, portaging, driving from an hour south of the cities and staying up late the night before packing. so really it couldn't get any worse. and of course it starts to rain. so its dark, raining and we don't have a campsite. we finally find one and we try to get a fire started. everything is wet and it's windy so no fire. we say screw the fire we need to hang our food and set up a tent. took us alllllllll night and we slept like shit. so in the morning we decided to stay at that site two nights because we had such a shitty time the day before. then the next day we find a sweet campsite and go hiking in the woods. there were a lot of down trees and we walked on nothing but down trees for about a mile. it was awesome. then the next day we found a nice cliff to jump off into the water. this was in june so the water was still pretty cold but it was super fun. our final campsite was probably the best. we landed our canoes and up two huge bolder was where our tent was. awesome view of the lake and sunset. there was some pretty fun jumping from rock to rock along the shore. it's a great experience and one of the least spoiled places left. I would highly recommend a trip there if you like canoing and hiking.

in Northern MN there is a lot of lakes along the Canadian border. all pretty close to each other. So the Boundary Waters Canoe Area is a big protected wilderness with minimal almost none human development. you buy permits to be in the area for a specific amount of time. They have a finite number of permits to keep down the number of people in the BWCA. so you set in in a specific place and make your way from lake to lake carrying all your gear from lake to lake. pretty good fishing, great hiking and immaculate wilderness viewables.

The Boundary Waters is a region along the Minnesota/Canada border that is filled with thousands upon thousands of lakes. No motor craft are allowed so it is only accessible by canoe. People go there to get away from the daily grind of life. I have found it to be a place of peace and serenity.
