I would have loved to take a gap year between high school and college, but I knew that I wouldn't end up going to college if I got used to not going to school for a year. I think I made the right choice to go straight in. To each his own though.

Im older than all of you but the idea of gap year makes sense for some people. There are students who work hard in high school and know what they want generally and can transition to college easily and do very well. However there is a large group of graduating hs'ers who have no clue what they want, werent that good in school(didnt try very hard), and have motivations other then doing what the rest of the world thinks is right for them. I spent the first 4 years of my college experience working too much to do well in school because i wanted a nice car, ability to travel, ect. I basically destroyed my transcript. I took the next 4 years to figure out what i wanted to do and fix all of the grades that I fucked up in the first place. Moral of the story is if you think you need a gap year TAKE ONE!! I wish i would have known about this fabled thing back then. It would have saved me thousands of dollars and 4 years half assin it in school and another 4 of knowing what i wanted to fix what I had ruined.

I thought about taking a gap year but decided not too. I think it was best to go straight into college. I probably would've ended up too lazy to go back if I took time off anyway. I think the right choice is just going right away and getting it over with.

I did a gap year last year just travelling and skiing.
It was super fun and worth it but now that i am at uni i find it extremely hard to get back into studying.
If i went straight to uni i would not have this problem!

im heading into my senior year of high school and im going to do one. im going to take classes at a community college from september to december, then go ski bum in utah until march and then take classes from march to may at the community college. community college is cheap and this way i wont lose much work ethic and ill have a few extra credits for when i go to my real college

I did it. It was a needed break. Youre going to work for a large portion of your life so why not take a year off before the shit storm begins.

I start school at the end of august and i cant wait for it to begin. Some people think they wont have the drive to go back to school after a gap but i think its the opposite. Now that i took a year off i have the urge to fill my cranium with unknown knowledge.

You definitely learn while youre not in school too. The real world hits you with a brick and all of the sudden you cook youre own meals, take responsibility for your actions, make yourself presentable to society and truly know what it feels like to be an adult. With the exception of paying health insurance and and maybe the cell phone bill haha

I don't know, people who do well in hs may think they know what they want to do, but I think 18 is too young to make decisions for the rest of your life I did well in hs, 3.5 gpa and ap scholar with distinction, then went to college and got a 4.0 my first semester. The problem is, I have no idea what I want to do post graduation, and getting general degrees like communications are nearly useless and a huge waste of money in my opinion. So I dropped out. I lived alone in an apartment immediately after hs, and through my first year off college. After my year of college I moved back in with my parents and in four months saved ten grand (take advantage of no rent if you can). Right. Now I am sitting in the Sydney airport about to Vito Thailand. I've been living in new Zealand for the past 7 months, and a solutely love it. After this I will twice in australia, traces through Asia and all the way Iovef to Europe. Dropping out was the best decision I could have made. School will always be there, but if you go to school, and get a real job it is a lot harder to just get up and see the world. If you plan on taking a gap year, I recommend going somewhere new, this can be as easy as Utah if you live in co or vice versa. Moving to a new place and forcing yourself to meet new people is great for character building. Also, apply and defer for a year, this will make it a lot more likely to go back after a year if that is what you want to do.

taking a year off was probably the best thing I've ever done. You don't learn academically, but what you learn about people and real life is irreplaceable.

Definitely move away from home: save up some cash while you're at home, make a plan, set definitive dates, try and get a job before you move or asap once you're there, even if you have a lot of savings, and be open to anyone, anything and everything--new, unexpected experiences are what you should live for.
If you're definitely going to college, apply to prospective schools and defer your acceptance for a year. It makes it so you have to go back to school after the year; or if some opportunity comes up during the year, you can still get out of it.
