Marriage, because people get drunk and married in Vegas. The divorce rate is nearly fifty percent, people get married solely because they got pregnant, or need immigration, or any other reason than they are in love and want to spend the rest of their lives together. first of all i was the first person in this thread to post about the kardashian wedding so maybe you should read the whole thread before acting like i havent acknowledged the many disgraces towards marriage in this country. secondly it just bothers me that we live in a society where majority rules and gays are unable to accept this. the majority of the population in the united states is heterosexual, the minority is homosexual. if you want to be equal and enjoy marriage then be a part of the majority. if you want to be different then be a minority but dont bitch and complain because you are the minority and dont get the rights of the majority

Outside of religious beliefs, how is Same Sex marriage illegal?

Marriage in the view of the state basically grants your spouse the legal power to make medical decisions for you, and also to share and inherit many benefits of yours. Why, except for religious beliefs and tradition, does anyone have a problem with this?

Financial implications sure, but that can't be a valid reason for denying consenting adults the ability to marry?

Sanctity of marriage? That's just a religious belief. Separation of church and state remember.

in reference to the above yes now we laugh at the times when women couldnt vote and blacks had seperate bathrooms. we have come very far but if you ask a woman today if she supports womens suffrage she prolly wont have a clue what your talking about. many times people take their rights for granted and truly dont appreciate them. and finally i was not wrong in stating that majority rules this country. that is a fact it is how our legal system operates. so as long as that isnt changing any time soon then the fate of gay marriage hopefuls will be decided by the voters and ultimately the majority. and seeing how north carolina and prop 8 have stirred up the people this vote will continually be heated and the minority will not be able to easily get what they want for every state any time soon.

Not appreciating rights doesn't mean people don't deserve them. Many Americans don't appreciate the fantastic middle class lifestyle they've been allowed to live. It doesn't mean they don't deserve it. What I was saying was that those two "minorities" became majorities through civil rights movements like the one that's going on now for homosexuals. It's not like a black person could choose to be white to enjoy the benefits of being white, just like gay people can't choose to be heterosexual. If they could, don't you think they would? It'd make their lives a hell of a lot easier.

You're not wrong in stating that majority rules. Not by any means. But you basing your argument on the fact that the majority says x, and x will be the status quo for the near future, is wrong. That doesn't address any facts.

I understand that you feel that marriage is a sacred bond between a man and a woman. But why can't two men/women skip the religious involvement and get married so that they can experience the same tax and living benefits as those other men and women? By denying them marriage, you deny them a right to those opportunities.

Homosexuality most likely evolved as a helpful family trait. To have a non-reproducing member of the family can be very helpful to help in the rearing of nieces and nephews. Historically it has been very difficult for humans to keep their young alive. I think it's very obvious why this would be advantageous. Nowadays people don't lose their young to illness left and right, so it's not as evident. Homosexuality is completely natural.

Why do 4 year olds have a confused face when they see two men kissing? Because society has engrained in their minds that it's weird from the time they've come out of the womb. Just because members of our society thinks it's weird doesn't mean it is.

Many native american societies revere homosexuals as being blessed by the gods and are spiritually above the rest of society. Read up on the Ancient Greeks. They believed that women were strictly around for reproducing, but a man's love was only reserved for other men. Women were not deemed worthy of a man's love. Again, homosexuality is completely natural.

Sorry if I did call you a bigot or something along those lines at some point El_Barto, reading this makes it clear you are not.

However, the city of Boston has laws in place that grant homosexuals the right to marry and the rights that come along with a marriage certificate. Chik-fil-a not only disagrees with this law (which is fine with me) but they take it a step further and are actually indirectly funding organized attacks on the very law Boston passed and is very proud of. The Mayor is not discriminating against Chik-fil-a because of their opinions, he's protecting the laws of his City from Chik-fil-a's actions against them.

In his letter to Mr. Cathy, he says that Chik-fil-a has made prejudicial statements and we are a city that doesnt discriminate, but I urge you not to come to boston because we are discriminating on your beliefs.

Chik-fil-a is a private company, they can express what ever views they want on any manner, what I was trying to say is read the latter to Mr. Cathy. He says there is no place for discrimination on boston's freedom trail, and no place for your company. He is discriminating against their beliefs. He views chik-fil-a's views as wrong, and chik-fil-a finds his views wrong. But chik-fil-a isnt saying that gays can not eat at their restaurant.
