so they dont believe in gay marriage and support organizations that share the same beliefs. whats the big deal? if they were harassing gays or something that would be a different story, but it just sounds like they are voicing their pretty typical religious beliefs and supporting organizations that have the same beliefs.

they dont want gays to get married, because their definition of marriage is between a man and a woman. well my definition of marriage i think should be between two people of any sex. darn we have different opinions, and ill voice my opinions, but i wont do it in the pathetic, childish way of generalizing chick-fil-a and labeling them as homophobic intolerant fucks.
i dont believe a brother and sister, a mother and son, a mother and mother, etc.. should get married, am i now a stupid intolerant redneck?

No, it's because it doesn't want to turn into a shithole like Medford, which outside of what... used car dealerships, Harry and David and the hospital... doesn't have shit for a locally run businesses that can carry their own weight and attract anyone.

and... in Oregon we don't have sales tax so the government wont get in the way of your dogwatches from that standpoint... Lucky you.

That said, if your dog watches had 'blacks are going to hell' put on the faces, you might have an issue, there guy...

If an area, in this case Boston, repeatedly votes in a certain way to support certain laws it is the duty of the government to support the people's choice. Boston has shown to be supportive of gay rights and equality. To allow a company that financially supports anti-gay anti-equality organizations to operate in a city where the majority of the voters are pro-equality is contradictory to the voters' choice. With the mega-corporations of today the consumer is powerless. Consumers can't fight against extreme advertising. One function of the government in the Unites States is to ensure that equality is possible between the ideas of the corporation and the ideas of the citizen. It often fails to do so. Massachusetts has chosen to support gay marriage and to allow Chik-Fil-A to use profits from Massachusetts to support anti-equality legislation is to undermine the voters' power.

I think regulation of where a company can set up shop and efficiency regulation such as how much pollutants a company can put out into the environment are entirely different arguments.

and yeah. K-street pretty much runs the show and will continue to for years to come, as long as they are given so much clout on the hill.

what you're not getting though, is that it's NOT the government's job to regulate this.

If Chick-fil-a opens a store in Boston, and the people of Boston/Mass. don't agree with the beliefs behind the company, they won't support them, and they'll go out of business at those locations. It's the free market, the people are free to choose who they support, and who they don't.

It's not as if Chick-fil-a opens a restaurant, that the people are obligated to support them against their own free will.

Do you really trust the consumer? Do you really trust corporations to tell us the truth and not use advertising and other means to manipulate consumers? Do you really think corporate bullying is good for the economy?

The "easiest" and "best" route for people might not always be the one they choose. There are a lot of options out there that people don't even know about, a lot goes on behind the scenes. The government tries to protect its citizens, and as good as democracy is in some respects, all of the dumbasses whose vote holds the same power as the informed citizen's really throw things off.

Not always the case. As I think I mentioned, corporations have the power of advertisement these days. Chick-fil-a starts advertising all over Boston and pretty soon people start to forget about the fact that they support anti-equality groups. I can choose to support a company, but I can't choose not to see huge billboards, their logo, or their commercials. Advertising works. Corporations like Chick-fil-a are obsessed with eliminating all sources of competition. With no government regulation in private business we really wouldn't have a choice about who to support, since companies would form unhealthy monopolies.

and certain municipalities in oregon do have sales tax, and income tax, and property tax. maybe we could add a bigot tax?

A free and open market doesn't have something like the SEC to insure and enforce rules upon it. I trust the market, but to only an extent, since the market has become more and more corporatized. Hell, I think there are only about 7 companies that practically dicate most of the world's diet... That's not wide enough of a competitive market for me.

If people forget about Chick-fil-a's owners' stance on gay marriage, and start eating their food, then it's painfully obvious that the people's dedication and belief in the gay rights wasn't as strong as you once thought. It's not people getting brain-washed by these companies. It's people deciding, on their own, that the product that they produce is of more importance than the stance they take on certain ethical issues.

"Throughout our history" means throughout our history without computers, billboards, the internet, social networks, cell phones, cars, or a global economy. Our history shows that democracy is a shitty form of government, yet we have one.

I think people really underestimate the power of huge companies and, I'll say it again, advertising. Companies can advertise without violating regulations and still fuck with consumers. Society wasn't and isn't really ready for it.

You talk about tests for voting, but they're unconstitutional. They used to have them in the South to prevent blacks and poor whites from voting. Plus, anyone can pass a basic knowledge and competency exam. Tests for voting really aren't practical. Democracy is a very very flawed system. It's not natural for people to be equal under the law and have an equal vote. For the average person it sure beats communism or monarchy, but if we want democracy these are the kind of shitstorms/issues/debates/fuck ups we're going to have to deal with.

You have some sound reasoning, but I think all of us are too focused on the small issue and not the functioning of society as a whole.

Please call me a queer lover. It would be very accurate, I love my gay friends and accept them 100% for who they are. Themselves. It's the only person they know how to be. I guess I take issue with anyone who for any reason looks at them and says "you are less of a human being and I find you unworthy of the same rights as I am given" Can you imagine if the government denied you the right to be married for being white, straight, Christian or anything else you were born as? I would have your back too. I am 100% with your personal right to be you, and to look down on others as you see fit. I am not ok with that going beyond your right to be you - and having you or anyone else deciding for others who they can and cannot be. That's where I draw the line. You cannot decide who someone else can be, or where exactly they become human enough to be as good as you and deserve the same things out of life. After all, there are what, 6 billion people on the planet and not one is the same? Come on.

I never stated that it would solely be based on perceived financial gain, but that does go into the equation for whether or not a city/town should allow if anything at LEAST an outside, and corporate company into it's area. It has no obligation to do so.

And.. the "State of Jefferson's" capital is in California soo... that's kinda silly to say haha.

And yes, they do. Ashland for one has a sales tax on prepared food (cashing in on the high profile restaurant cashflow). Not a soul ever complains about it (unless they just aren't used to it because they aren't from Ashland - in which case they are complaining about how 'expensive' ashland is as a whole - which is LOLs)

I wouldn't be down for a bigot tax, as that's basically going to turn into a 'use of the 1st amendment tax' but I still have my rights to stand hard against the idiots who roll in from out of town with giant signs telling gays they're going to hell...

For a CEO to risk the public image of his company and potentially lots of revenue by saying he (and by association his company) is against gay marriage makes me think he must hate gays especially if religion is involved. The bible says it's an abomination which is pretty strong language. Obviously this is an assumption but I would put money on it that the guy has more than just a general dislike to gays

That is already how it works when you want to open a store dude. You need to get approved, which is a long process which involves, among many other things, showing some evidence your business will be successful. Business make sales, sales are taxed, the government needs the tax money, the government approves new Businesses. Why would they let someone start a business destined to fail. This is basic shit.

And stop being so intolerant of people who are intolerant of people who are intolerant. Nevermind actually, I dont want to be intolerant of people who are intolerant of people who are intolerant of intolerant people becuase I think everyone is entitled to their opinion even when it starts to encroach on people's rights.

To be honest, even though we disagree I think your intentions are solid. I don't think you're coming off as hopelessly conservative, but I still think you're overlooking the huge differences between today's society and the societies of "history".

I also have no faith in the individual American, and by agreeing on that aspect you're supporting my overall point. Most people can't function adequately on their own. They are sheep. We always have to pick someone to follow.

Corporations hold as much control as the government does. You really need to elaborate on "the free market is the most effective way of allocating resources". When you say this it sounds to me like you're saying that the way Standard Oil operated 100 years ago is a good thing, and that thousands of poor-as-dirt workers should be poor as long as a few people can live comfortably or extravagantly.



In my personal opinion, technology is advancing much faster than we are. Computers, transportation, advertisement, and mass media really fucked things up for us. Old standards don't hold true anymore. Corporations interfere with the way society functions to such a degree that government needs to deal with them to preserve the ideals in the Constitution and Declaration.
