2:35:1 look?

if i want to film something in the cinematic look (2:35:1), is there something i can do on my t2i to achieve this? like creating black stripes on my lcd? to be sure that everything is in the center of the shot?

some tape marks could help. just dont shoot super tight on your subject

i'd just convert it to 2:35 in post so you'd have a little more play with your composition if you're not happy with it

if you don't have ML and don't have time to install it, i would just add some tape to your lcd, like gaffers tape. that will help with a guideline. to find out where to put the tape you could take a quick stationary video of something with distinguishable (like just in your house or the outside of your house) then put in in your timeline and stuff like you normally would, then export it with the 2:35:1 (cinescope) crop. watch the video, see where it crops off your image, playback the video on your lcd, add tape to get the same image you see on your computer and bam. done.

but its easier to get ML and download it real quick, then turn on the crop marks. smooth as butta

The crop bars arent really THAT helpful. If I were shooting a 2:35 crop for a while, and knew It was something I liked, then yeah I would defiantly download ML and get them. If your just doing this for one shoot, just make sure you shoot a little bit wider than normal, and you will be fine. Once your in post, follow phillip bloom's tutorial on how to edit in 2:35. He will show you how to make your canvas 2:35, so therefore you can move your image around. This is better than just exporting to the crop IMO.

i agree, you can frame everything properly without having to rearrange your image in post, you can edit normally without any guides knowing that the crop is all framed exactly how you wanted it to begin with. then all you have to do is export to that crop with compressor straight from fcp, much easier and your video stays cropped uploading to vimeo and such

Exactly.

Put your camera in photo mode. Change the photo aspect ratio to 16x9 and take a photo. Then edit the image in Photoshop with 2:35 crop marks. Save the photo as a jpg, keeping the same naming convention and replace the original photo on your SD card.

Put the SD card back int the camera, and view your image with the 2:35 aspect ratio. Then use paper gaffers tape (so you don't leave residue) or use an LCD screen protector, and mask off the LCD according to your crop marks.

clever yes, but kind of a roundabout way of doing it when you can just use ML cropmarks. on a 7D that would be a great way to do it, but on a Txi there's no reason not to install ML

I think he's just confused as I was earlier in this thread. I'd never filmed Cinematic look until I tried it out yesterday with magic lantern. I was under the impression with the bars on-camera LCD the actual video file would already be 2:35. Turns out it's still 16:9

they are only an overlay, guidlines to help you frame your video so when you export it and crop it during the export, everything is frames just right

for sure, I didn't know that's how it worked. I always wondered why anyone would "crop" in-camera by filming in 2:35, I'm retarded

Im not positive what hes trying to say, but I think he is referring to doing the crop this way. Instead of just exporting to it.

Literally the same way as the video i posted above...

I use the ML cinescope cropmarks everytime i shoot, i was just suggesting if you dont have ML and dont wanna use any tape just shoot your vid a little wid and then do it in post.

Agreed. If shooting on a Txi, there's no reason not to have ML regardless.
