i might be. the horcrux has a fragment of voldemorts soul to it. possesses people and would destroy you if you wore it too long. doesn't the one ring more or less do the same thing? both have to be destroyed to finish off the big evil bad guy for good. really the difference is that the one ring makes you invisible and the horcruxes don't...right? then again, i might just be stupid

a long time ago. back before i was old enough to get it, maybe. what else does the one ring do that makes it so much more powerful than the horcrux ring?

Harry is a Horcrux, and obviously voldemort aslso is. Harry had to be the one to kill Voldemort. Dumbledore didn't know where the other horcruxes were also

exactly this, and not to mention, why does everyone keep bringing up the balrog, sure it looks badass, but in the grand scheme (maybe differently portrayed in the movies from the books, i havent read them yet) but the balrog can be better compared to a death eater. dumbledore planned to be killed, and regarding power, there is an immense list of spells, including the unforgivable spells in particular, which he and many other characters chose not to use, whereas the focus of the lord of the rings does not have nearly as much of an in depth and comprehensive collection and does not play as much of a part in the trilogy as wizardry does in harry potter.

i personally think its apples to oranges, but thats just me, if i had to pick a side, it would probably be dumbledore, but then again i havent read lotr, nor have i spent nearly as much time with it as i have the harry potter series

its not exactly a straightforward comparison when dumbledore wasnt necessarily defeated, as much as he sacrificed his life to defeat voldemort.

i dont disagree with you, but i feel there are more things to be considered than dumbledore is dead and gandalf isnt.

and before you say it, red blooded male, 1990, heterosexual as shit, then again, not saying youre wrong in the first place haha

Not to mention that Gandalf's purpose in his existence on middle earth was to defeat Sauron. He was sent by the Valar along with other wizards and he was the only one the helped in the defeating of Sauron. Gandalf defeated the Balrog who is way more powerful than any Death Eater. The fight alone against Durin's Bane (the balrog in the movies) took him a solid 8 days of fighting. Its not just a matter of casting a patronus spell and making the enemy fly away.

While Dumbledore had the Elder Wand, Gandalf had Glamdring, which is one of the most powerful swords in all of middle earth. He got this sword in the Hobbit from the Trolls and it combined with his staff make him a very very powerful wizard.

Gandalf also possesses one of the Elven Rings of power. This ring Narya helps him to inspire those around him to stand for whats right which is what makes Gandalf one of the greatest leaders in LotR

I could keep going on and on but bottom line is, Gandalf wins.

Quick edit:

The fight with Durin's Bane only lasted 2 days on top of the snowy mountain but combined with the fall from the bridge of Khazad Dun it lasted about 8 days total.

Wow my bad completely mixed the two up. I was thinking of the ringwraiths and immediately compared to the dementors in HP. Confusion on my part.

Still Balrog > Death Eater.

AND

Ring Wraith > Dementor

oh for sure, i just wanted to point that out, and only point out that defeating the balrog is not on par with shit kicking grindlewald for instance, if anything, the balrog is more of a minion than anything, like a named, yet less significant bond villain (eg. jaws), or like one of the bosses in megaman that leads up to fighting wiley, or whoever the bad guy is.


my biggest counterarguement against gandalf being superior to dumbledore is that dumbledore's abilities, knowledge and skill are showcased much more whereas gandalf is showcased more of a shit kicker and all around badass. dumbledore knows and experiences so much that he has to store his memories to be able to recount them.

and i compared the balrog/durin's bane (proper name is entirely beside the point) to grindewald because in the harry potter universe, he is second only to voldemort, and there isnt much more detail about the fight other than that. my point was that youre saying the balrog is the absolute strongest in lotr second only to sauron himself.

im over it though, way too much hate for a side that i am not actually for haha

because that would mean dumbledore would have to kill harry seeing as harry was a horcrux, which the only person who could kill that horcrux was voldemort, which is why harry had to let voldemort "kill" him thus resulting in voldemorts demise.

Dumbledore was a genius. and I love the Harry Potter books.




but there is no fucking way Dumbledore would be Gandalf.

Seriously. Gandalf is over 2000 years old. He's seen a lot more shit than Dumbledore ever saw.

And to whoever said that the Balrog was just a minion. Bullshit. Durin's Bane was a Maiar (Just like Gandalf, Saruman, and Sauron) who was corrupted by Morgoth long before LotR. He is another servant of Morgoth just like Sauron is and the only reason Sauron is more powerful is because of the One Ring. Also, Sauron didn't control Durin's Bane, in fact nobody even thought that any of the Balrogs survived the ancient wars that occurred thousands of years before the LotR era. Durin's Bane hid in the Misty Mountains and was awoken by the dwarves that mined too deep looking for Mithril.

Durin's Bane was not simply a servant of Sauron. He was equal in power to Sauron and even more powerful than Saruman. Not merely a side-boss that Gandalf had to kill so that they could keep going on their Journey.

Durin's Bane = Sauron in terms of strength. Sauron just gets the extra edge because of the One Ring. Without the ring, they would be equal in strength.

How? I said that Sauron and Durin's Bane are equal in power and rank because they were both servants of Morgoth. Sauron didn't control Durin's Bane and didn't even know of his existence for thousands of years. The only thing that gave Sauron the extra power over Durin's Bane was the One Ring. I realize my response was worded a little weird but it's all in there.

Dumbledore can't go invisible. He doesn't have Harry's cloak. And Gandalf doesn't have the One Ring so he can't either. Stupid argument is stupid.

Plus this is a duel, apparating would be the same as running which would just show that Dumbledore is a pussy and can't face Gandalf.
