from time to time i hear mini debates over whether skaters or skiers take harsher falls (discuss?). im not sure which side i would take but damn this looked painful

Skiing falls are worst in most cases, you're going way bigger and going way faster than on a skateboard. I'd say handrail bails on a skateboard are worst though, but skating gaps and ledges not really.

And the dude in the video was a fucking retard, holy shit. Didn't even jump.

I'd say skateboarding looks worse just because of landing on pavement but skiing has way more potential for injury because the tricks are so big

Skateboarders take wayyyy gnarlier falls than skiers. Absolutely they are. You have to take into account just your everyday bail rather than just heavy slams. Heavy slams in any sport are gnarly it's the average slam that shows which sport takes harder falls. Our normal falls trying a 13 stair for 40 times. Is way worse that you trying a rail and falling onto snow or just slipping off half way. If we slip off half way we're eating shit.

there are plenty of people who skate 13s regularly, im pretty sure that wasnt the point though. basically every single time you fall skating you fall hard to cement/asphalt/whatever. even from just the height of a ledge that hurts after a while. in skiing though you fall to snow, and your board doesnt come into play as something that can injure you haha

I'm not trying to be a dick and call anyone out, but I'm having a hard time believing you guys skate if you think 13 is a seshable number of stairs. Even 10s are brutal on you for more than a bail or two.

If you're actually committing to the trick it's not rough on your feet if you're kicking out like a pussy every attempt then yeah your feet are going to be fucked. I never said I was hitting 13 stairs everyday but I film about 4 days a week out of those 4 days I am doing a large set or rail down a large set probably 2 of those days but there has been times where we will sesh a large set or large rail every day we film. I was also referring to skating 13 stair rails but made a mistake and didn't put that in my original post. Rails will obviously less impact than jsut throwing yourself down a set.

Never understood the no pads or helmet in skating. Your flying around on a board with wheels on the concrete, down stairs, over gaps and what not, and not even a helmet? The dude in the video is lucky he is alive, brain injuries are very scary and not much is known about them still.

No way man, with skiing you can make a jump so perfect that as long as you don't land on your head you are fine, being able to slide out of falls on snow helps so much. Skaters land on solid concrete, and they are not able to slide on their back down a landing or whatever usually.

I mean I'm ok at skating and after 4 or 5 falls on anything over a ten I'm done. That being said I ski freeway in breck and I have had much worse falls and much worse injurys skiing. i dont know any people who  have broken femurs skating but 3 people skiing.

skateboarding has way more smaller injuries like bad bruises and cuts and pavement related shit. skiing has more serious injuries like broken bones and torn ligaments due to the bigger tricks. both gnarly though, i prefer falling on skis then on a skateboard

Oop NOW WE CANT PLAY NO MORE!

I don't know where i stand on this but classic Newschoolers thinking about just park skiing... Do oyu guys remember how many people died just this last winter from avalanches? I would much rather take a 6 foot fall to concrete than be pulled down or just fall down an entire mountain over rocks and cliffs.

One thing i have learned from skateboarding though is it sure looks cooler to have a seizure with out a helmet on than with one... Fucking idiots.

This could have turned way worse if he choked on his tongue/salive/puke(if he needed to puke).

There is a reason that moves like the recovery postion exist.

First aid people, it's not that hard and can potentially save people.



As far as the skiing vs skateboarding goes:
Skateboarding: lots of small annoying cuts and scrapes.
Skiing less injuries but really big bruises.

I prefer to bail skiing, just because I hate scrapes and cuts.

Skateboarding has way me gnar bails. It's to concrete, and it's much easier to take big drops on skis than a skateboard.

And my opinion might be a little skewed because I ski a tiny 150 foot hill that is almost always ice and about as hard as concrete. I don't know what it's like out west where it snows a bunch.

Ice is still slippery though, say you fall off a rail onto your back. You are falling downhill on a slippery surface, so the impact isn't as jarring and you just slide out. Same thing when you lose control in the air on a jump and land on your back or something. On a skateboard, when you fall and hit the concrete, you come to a jarring, painful stop.

Video relevant. If Mr. Jordan landed on concrete instead of snow, he would have no skin left.

Apples and oranges dude. Skaters are never taking 50 foot gaps to concrete. (Mega ramp guys don't can't, they're falling onto smooth wood with pads). Ice fucking hurts like, it's not like you fall onto it and all the impact just magically dissapears. Especially with shitty flat midwest landings.

They may never take 50 ft gaps to concrete, the principle is still the same. And yes, ice hurts, but less friction means you can slide away instead of ripping off skin, catching and bending limbs ways they aren't supposed too, etc.

For someone who skates and skis to say that skiing takes worse slams must mean you don't push yourself too hard at skating. No one is bashing skiing or what they do isn't gnarly. But skateboarding falls are over all worse than skiing or snowboarding. It's just a fact.

You're not going anywhere near as fast on a skateboard when skating as you are on skis. And most of the time when you bail skating, you just roll. People are so terrified of concrete and I don't really get it. It doesn't really get gnarly unless you get tangled on a handrail or are skating 10+ stairs.

EXPERIMENT TIME

Take a skateboard and bomb down a hill. Once you get to a good speed, (lets say even just 15 mph) jump off and slide out on your hips/side.

Jump on your skis and bomb down a hill. Go the same speed, and purposely bail out onto you hips/side.

I guarantee the skateboard scenario will go far worse than the ski scenario.
