AIDS created in Western labs, Nobel laureate says.
Peace Prize recipient alleges conspiracy.
A Canadian AIDS group said yesterday it is unfortunate that the winner of the Nobel Peace Price, Kenyan environmentalist Wangari Maathai, had depicted the deadly virus as a biological weapon invented by the West to wipe out Africans.
After accepting her Nobel, Ms. Maathai repeated a conspiracy theory on the weekend that is not uncommon in Africa: that AIDS was produced in a Western laboratory as part of a plot against blacks. She made similar allegations in August.
Ms. Maathai kicked off her reign as the first African woman to become a Nobel laureate by telling reporters AIDS did not originate in monkeys, as some believe, but may instead have been 'created by a scientist for biological warfare.'
In August, she caused a furor in Kenya when she was quoted in the East African Standard as calling AIDS a biological weapon devised to destroy black people.
'AIDS is not a curse from God to Africans or the black people. It is a tool to control them designed by some evil-minded scientists,' she said.
In an interview with Time magazine published this week, she said she had 'no idea who created AIDS and whether it is a biological agent or not. But I do know things like that don't come from the moon. I have always thought that it is important to tell people the truth, but I guess there is some truth that must not be too exposed.'
Asked to elaborate, she responded: 'I'm referring to AIDS. I am sure people know where it came from. And I'm quite sure it did not come from the monkeys.
