I always saw the chicken as a very religious chicken, and saw the road as life in all its entirety, and the other side as heaven. The chicken lived life to get to heaven.


Then again, it could just be a really corny joke

Think of it this way. He had the balls to do what we all wish we could do. Death really is quite comforting. When you are dead you feel neither pleasure or pain

Plato talks much about death in his earlier works like Phaedo. While he does talk about the immorality of suicide. He really does a good job of highlighting the great things that come with death.

That's just how I read Phaedo, never the less an amazing dialogue.
