I don't know about this...

I mean hating on people that are skiing and enjoying themselves isn't a good idea. Just makes us elitest. I mean what should they be doing, getting into lessons and racing to make sure they have a turn that is acceptable enough for them to be allowed on the rest of the mountain?

I think as a shrinking sport we should let someone enjoy whatever part of the mountain they so choose.

what's even the point in trying to ski the park if you don't know how to properly use your edges? hell, i've even heard of kids in the park who don't use poles because they don't know HOW to use them.

there's so much basic technique involved in skiing that it's just dangerous to be trying to hit rails and jumps if you can't grasp these basics.

it's not being elitest, it's just that some kids don't give a shit and just want to do what's cool without learning the damn basics.

maybe hes a pow skiier i have seen this but it doesnt bother me i got lucky and my dad taught me how to ski when i was like 3 then i stopped and picked it back up in the park 2 years ago

It seems like new trends form so fast, and die out so fast now. Theres just so many different styles now.

But not really though - I mean sure it would be great for someone to learn more about skiing, but if you can go in a straight line you could hit small jumps and rails. YOu're not going to be pro, and you're not going to hit the rest of the mountain but you can build a foundation of a love for the sport.

See that is the thing - inside of our small elite group of 'expert' skiers, we don't realize that we rely on a huge number of people that ski around 5 total times per year to keep the industry flowing. Skiers in general don't pick up the sport, because its too fucking hard, too expensive, and far too inconvenient. Its always a challenge to get people new onto the slopes and enjoying themselves enough to become lifetime skiers.

Letting someone enjoy themselves snowplowing through the park and hitting a box straight on that is basically buried in the snow can help foster the love for skiing. I think its totally awesome to have people that are finding passion for the lifestyle in this manner, and it actually makes it cooler for a new younger person to give it a shot.

If they take a couple of years lapping the park with no knowledge of how to accomplish a perfect turn, they're not harming anyone. Last thing we need to do is make fun of them to the point that they say "Man those fucking skiers are assholes. I'm just trying to enjoy myself."

Rather, if we support them and let them do what they enjoy, they will inevitably fall further in love with the sport and seek more. Eventually they will want to learn better turning technique (even if only to hit bigger jumps) and in time they'll want to experience tree skiing or some other part that will get them to expand their horizions.

Most importantly, they will buy all new equipment, and that money will actually go to support pro skiers' salaries. Afterall, the dope kids in the park don't buy fuck all... they get it for free or pro deal most of the time. The new kids in the park, the casual weekend warriors on the groomers and the rich guys showing off their flashy digs are the ones that pay the bills behind the scenes.

well i'm not talking about the people who have never skied before, or those skiing through the mini park. i'm talking kids skiing the normal/big sized parks, but riding around on their tails and washing around instead of actually turning.

i'm sure that's what the kid was talking about that you quoted originally, kids that can ski the park well, but just flat out look uncomfortable on skis (go ski pick 'n shovel at PC and you'll see an abundance of these kids)

i get that i can't discredit their good time, but it just makes me sad for the future of skiing, where all the emphasis (big assumption by me here) will be on doing the cool things without even learning the basics. it will just result in more "I HAVE SHINBANG WILL FULL TILTS FIX THIS?" they're looking for shortcut solutions to their problems when they could just learn how to ski correctly and avoid these issues.

i just don't get the point of trying to do tricks on skis when you can't make it down the mountain comfortably..i mean the more you know how to use your skis, the easier it's going to be to figure out certain jumps, rails, and tricks...it's so obvious yet no one really cares, they want to do dubs.

But won't they come to that realisation at one point any way?

I completely agree with you that it seems insane to only ride park without ever actually learning to ski... and I don't necessarily think that is right.

However, I don't think its right to take away someone's freedom to do this if that is what they choose. I don't think its right to berate or hate a skier because he/she skies in a certain way that doesn't fit in with 'what is right'.

I also think that if you take the long-term approach, I'd bet that 95% of people that shred the park all day turn into 'real' skiers. The important part is keeping their stoke for the sport alive.

Lets play out two scenarios:

NEW SKIER 1 - Saw twin tips, caught a video on newschoolers fell in love starts riding park. Rides park all day every day, doesn't learn to turn properly. After 10 years, NEW SKIER 1 decides his knees are sore and experiments outside of the park. Loves the sport forever, and constantly re-invents himself as a skier.

NEW SKIER 2 - Saw twin tips, caught a video on newschoolers fell in love starts riding park. Rides park all day every day, doesn't learn to turn properly. However, fellow skiers see that this person is not learning to turn, and thereby begin to berate he/she constantly all day every day. They go online and post on the internet how this person is the worst thing that has ever happened to skiing. NEW SKIER 2 must stop riding terrain park, and register for ski instruction lessons or racing, where they will work on their turns all day every day until they earn the right to go back in the park and shred where they want to be. Then they have the ability to go and discover the rest of the mountain, but have been berated publicly, forced into boring turn-learning lessons and are less likely to enjoy the sport.

That's the point I'm making. NEW SKIER 2 doesn't sound like they'd be happy with the sport... however NEW SKIER 1 likely rode the stoke of the park all the way to a lifetime skier.

If I' was NEW SKIER 2 I'd probably start snowboarding where it doesn't matter if you learn park or learn to turn first, as its all part of the sport.
