I rate 0, 5 or 10. Usually 10 for funny things, contributions to people's threads, nice people, friends, and 0 to dicks, noncontributing or irrelevant bad things, horrible things, annoying people etc.
I stay pretty positive though you for example are at 10. A little untraditional I suppose but I find most people are at 10.
We've been doing the karma thing for almost 5 years now. So the question is: is NS more pleasant now than it was in 2007 (since that was the goal, right)? I'd say marginally. Search NS for the word "hate" and it's pretty obvious that threads like "NS hate", "Stop the hate", "Why so much hate on NS?" have gotten exponentially fewer since 2006. Either this place is a little more pleasant than it was a few years ago, or everyone just stopped caring.
Personally, I don't think I've changed anybody's karma in the past year, and I couldn't tell you what mine is, but I daresay a lot of people care about it.
Thats what i do, that way if someone does karma desrving stuff a lot they will be higher but if they are bad or stupid a lot they will be lower, while the people who only do little things go up or down a little bit
I think it should just be like "i like this person" so it's either "up" or "down" and then it will balance it out, so if 2 people "down" me, and 5 people "up" me, then I am at 3
I like reddits way of doing it. you upvote or downvote per post, and that all adds up to your karma, thatway if you have someone say something super smart in one thread and stupid in another, itl balance out, but you don't have to look at what you've raated them before.
