Need some backpack advice

I'm 6'3" 170. I'll be skiing bridger bowl mainly and i'm looking for a pack that can fit avy gear, water bottle, some food, and maybe an extra layer. I don't want it to be too bulky but I also don't want to make the mistake of buying a pack that is too small. I'm really diggin the ortovox free rider series because of the built in spine protector but i'm open to any suggestions. Thanks and +k

Dakine heli pro. Or heli pro dlx. They work for me!

I would highly recommend the BD Avalung packs, they are more expensive but you do get the advantage of the Avalung feature and BD quality is insane. I use the Bandit pack which is 16ltr, for and cat days the Bandit's volume is ideal. However for day touring I find the Bandit too small and find myself stashing extra layers and other essentials in my pockets. In my opinion the best all round volume would be the Outlaw or the Covert. Alternatively you could got for the Avalung Sling, this would allow you to add the Avalung feature to multiple regular packs without shelling out for an Avalung pack each time.

awesome thanks guys. i've been looking at dakine packs but i've heard mixed reviews about them. BD definitely has my trust, i use their climbing gear and all of it is absolutely bomber. the bandit seems a little small for me but the outlaw and covert seem good.

ended up going with the BD Agent. Low profile, 20L, small but not too small, and i trust black diamonds product fully. /thread.

i have used a dakine heli pro with water, some food, and extra clothes. It works great and is not too bulky

I've never had a more durable pack then my Dakines. Plus it has tons of straps to cinch it down so it will never be bulky. My vote is definitely for the heli pro.

The zip has failed on 4 Dakine packs I've had (bike, casual and photo packs) after 2-3 years. Plus they carry skis horribly and are generally over-engineered. Stick to BD, Mammut, etc.
