Need a fisheye / wide- angle lense reccomendation for a D40

any reccomendations, reviews, etc to consider.

i havent looked into specific lenses much, so im open to anything!

a lot of people on here use either a rokinon 8mm or a tokina 11-16 the tokina is a lot better (IMO) but the rokinon is cheaper but they are both solid lenses

First decide if you want a fisheye or a wide angle, what are you going to use it for? I went with the Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6 and I wish that I bought the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 instead because it is faster and it looks sharper.
I shoot skateboarding and I thought that the 8-16mm would be great because I didn't want a fisheye like everyone else but I regret that I didn't buy the Rokinon 8mm f/3.5 instead and saved up for the Tokina 11-16mm for skiing and landscape photos.

like the guys above me said, the Tokina 11-16 is an amazing lens. I got one since I hate fisheyes and I really like the UWA look a lot better, the small zoom range doesn't bother me since I have it at 11mm 99% of the time

Depends on your budget and depends on if you want a fish eye or wide angle.

Depending on your budget (I am going to assume it is around $400) because you have probably have just started your journey in the DSLR world i would go with the rokinon 8mm f/3.5. It is a pretty solid lense for the money because like there already has been NSers telling you to get the tokina 11-16 f/2.8 which is good don't get me wrong it just $600 so its your choice

Everyone seems to forget about the rokinon 14mm f2.8. It's an UWA, so it's a good budget version of the Tokina ($200 less) without having to go fisheye. My roommate just picked one up and it looks like a pretty sharp, solid lens.

I beg to differ. 14mm is plenty wide on a crop body, and you really shouldn't have any trouble getting what you need to get in the frame at that focal length.

If you want a wide angle, get the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. If you are on a budget get a Tokina 12-24mm f/4. Both come in old versions (cheaper) or new versions (with autofocus motor). If you get the old version you will have to focus manually on your D40 (not a problem with wide angle).

If you want a fish eye, your best option is the

If you want a fish eye, your best option is the Nikon 10.5mm f/2.8 fish eye. It is expensive, but it is worth it every bit. It is very sharp and will let you take photos in low light. A cheaper option is the Samyang 8mm f/3.5 fish eye. In the USA it is also marketed as Bower, Opteka, Rokinon, etc.. because of a trademark dispute with Samsung. The Samyang is a good fish eye, but very soft wide open. I find it only good in bright conditions or in combination with a flash. It is cheap though.

Nikon 10.5mm Fisheye

I have it. Great lens for the price cant seem to put it down anymore use it so much and its just awesome !
