Because we aren't brainwashed morons who do things out of blind faith.
Christians just believe in doing what is right. Knowing what is right from wrong is something we have inside of us, the bible merely reminds and guides us.
If you really, truly have a relationship with God, it is something that you can't really explain. You just know.
"Christians actually don't agree on what is right and what is wrong"
never said they did. Only they believe in doing what is right, and that their belief in what is right vs. wrong comes from within. For instance-- let's say I think homosexuality is wrong-- if I truly believe in my heart that it is wrong, and I'm not just choosing that stance to be malicious-- and I honestly believe that I am standing up for what is right. Then I am.
It's all about being a good person, with good intentions.
"Are you telling me that without the bible remind you not to murder people you would go ahead and do it?"
Don't be ridiculous. Be rational yourself. I figured you could use common sense to deduct what I meant. Apparently you can't so I'll give you an example...let's say you believe in the golden rule-- Matthew 7:12 "Do to others what you would have them do to you." But you've been fighting with your spouse a lot recently, and have gotten so upset that you've said some nasty things, or treated them with disrespect. You've lost sight of your beliefs-- the bible can be a reminder to keep you on the right path and guide you when you've lost your way-- that's all I was saying. I wasn't saying that the bible reminds me not to murder people otherwise I would-- I think you knew what I meant and at this point are just wasting my time, but I'm patient.
Am I saying that no one is brainwashed by religion? NO. My point was that, just because you're religious does not mean you're brain washed.
And holy shit-- pun unintended-- about he rib/apple/snake....how many times do I/others have to say that most don't take this stuff literally?
1. Ok-- fair enough-- but you originally placed all Christians into this category-- a lot is not all.
2. Well that's you-- everyone has their own way.
doesn't mean it was. I have rejected much of what has been taught to me in the Catholic church and in Christian churches. I've also adopted much of it. I am able to look at religion objectively, criticize freely, and my beliefs are malleable.
Why is it so important to discredit someone elses beliefs? I'm a modern christian, I have my beliefs but I can coexist in the world because I am tolerant towards other people and their beliefs.
I have gotten your point, I just disagree. If Christianity had but one set of rules and one strict definition there wouldn't be multiple denominations.
It is quite clear that you haven't been to a Christian church in a long, long, long time.
I get what you're saying-- sure, I'm a cafeteria christian and this bothers you. It obviously bothers you that I take the Christian title when you think that I am not a true Christian. My point was that even the church is cafeteria. All of the christian churches I've bee to lately take a much more modern approach to the religion. If you don't want "cafeteria christians" to call themselves christians- then start at the root-- go to the church and tell them they have no right to call themselves a christian church if they're going to pick and choose from the bible and not take things literally. If the church changes their name and denomination, I will change mine too. But as long as the religion I practice comes from the church I attend, and that church is a christian church by name/denomination, I will continue to consider myself a christian.
So if you get right down to it, it appears your stance is that all of the liberal christian churches out there stop calling themselves christian. Doesn't that seem futile?
If someone considered themself to be a Christian, could they live life however they pleased and still call themself a Christian? Hmmmmmm.
I could call myself a stoner and never actually touch cannabis. Are you Christian or just somebody who calls themself Christian.
