yup, watched a video about it yesterday. never believe this shit but this one was pretty convincing.

linked the ancient egyptian book of the dead or whatever its called with the bible. its the same shit, all jacked. grew up catholic, went to catholic school. shits a joke.

Plenty of people who don't believe in any sort of god do just as much charitable work as religious individuals, and they do it purely out of a love for humanity instead of a god. Obviously the results of humanitarianism are more important than the motivation, but I just don't see this as a great argument for why religion is beneficial to us (human beings).

What do you mean atheism has much more proven fact? Atheism is nothing, it is not a belief system. If atheism is a belief system then bald is a hair color. Atheists do not believe in a god because we don't see any evidence for it.

And in response to the quoted text: how can a position on the divine taken based solely on scientific evidence be made up? Unless you have a Nietzschean idea that science is just as baseless and false as religion then you can not claim that scientific evidence is made up.

This is true. The bible is honestly a collection of stories that teaches through examples. My religion teacher literally said they are parables, or fables/myths for those of you who slept through class as a small high schooler.

i was talking about THE Hogwarts, the one located in the scottish highlands, near hogsmeade and not far from dufftown, in banffshire. but at least you got a photo, which is infinitely more evidence than has ever been provided for the existence of this so-called "god".

I have attacked organized religion, and have debated with people about organized religion but as a secular humanist i believe that the public square should not give preferential treatment to any faith or set of beliefs.

The reason cafeteria christians bother me is because how can you claim that the bible is infallible and that it teaches the right thing when so much of it is filled with disgusting, violent, and immoral passages (which no one listens to). eg. people who say shit like homosexuality is a sin justify it with the bible, but none of them would think about stoning their neighbor to death for working on a sunday even though that law is held at the same standard in the bibles eyes.

Do Christians honestly talk to you about religion without you prompting it first?  I've found that most just keep their beliefs to themselves unless maybe their job is with the church.

I've had to defend my religioius beliefs a million times. But I have never been the one to bring it up.

Yes, and it doesn't have to start directly with religion. If someone says they don't support gay rights (to continue with the example) i will ask why and if they say "for religious reasons" I will hold them to that standard and ask them, not mockingly, why they don't obey most of the laws laid out in the bible but they choose to believe that one. I honestly haven't gotten a good explanation for that.

Couldn't the same be said for people who question homosexuality and their rights in this country?

When you have an opinion or a belief that infringes on other peoples rights, you're making it other peoples business. He has every right to question someone who discriminates and then hides behind religion. People can't expect to get away with that.

no no, you took my response wrong.  My "none of your business" was to him questioning why they follow some parts of the bible and not others. Not why they chose their stance on homosexuality.

I've basically gone by the thought process of Science, nature does crazy shit and it just happens, yes we affect it in someways and built the lives that we have, but evolution and other stuff is just nature doing crazy shit. Shit, maybe someday humans will evolve and be stronger, etc. There are no superpowers, or anybody greater than anybody, mother nature dictates our lives, and she's pretty lazy and doesn't do shit most of the time, but over time, big changes can occur in our environment and lives. Hell, she gets pissed sometimes and throws a hurricane, earthquake, etc. or two at us.

Because society has evolved. Morals have evolved. The laws of nature have evolved. 

Christians just believe in doing what is right.  If Christians followed the bible exactly, regardless of whether they felt it was right or ethical, well they'd be brainwashed.  Instead they think and choose for themselves.

See what I did there?

Homosexuality just happens to be an issue that some honestly feel is wrong.

So you admit that christianity is dated, and needs to evolve? I thought god was an omnipotent omniscient being? Was he wrong the first couple tries?

And about your last post: you're right, no one needs to prove themselves to me, and if they don't want to have a debate or talk about their beliefs thats fine, but usually when the subject arises they are all but willing to debate me, and i enjoy that, and i will pass judgment on them just as they pass judgment on me. You realize how much you're faith and belief system judges me? It says I will go to hell for eternity for not believing some stupid arab in the middle east is the son of god. I don't pass judgment even close to that. In fact a lot of my friends are religious and we have some great talks and debates.

Also if someone says they are against gay marriage they automatically should be required to give a supporting argument, and if they really don't want me knowing their reasoning they should remain silent on the subject.

And, I don't judge you. I also don't believe you're going to hell. I'm not sure I believe in hell.  My beliefs are ever changing as I grow and learn more about myself, others, and the world.

in my view the bible is God INSPIRED.  There isn't a passage of the bible that directly said that God came down and wrote the passages of the bible, but instead inspired and or sent angels that inspired people to write the passages.  The thing about the bible is that it is writen by people in completely different parts of the world, that did not know each other, but still wrote similar God inspired texts.  Obviously someone living in the middle east would take God saying "homosexuality is wrong" and could very easily turn that into "homosexuals should be stoned" when they wrote it down.  Also, a lot of the verses that people often sight as being brutal can actually be reinterpreted (if you look at the original texts) to simply be making a point and not actually have an actual meaning to them.  Because the verses were written by human beings, I do feel like they could evolve over time, and that is why you are seeing people that go back and re-evalute the initial scriptures and make re-write the translations, just as king james is only one translation.

True. It's not meant for literal translations of the stories of the bible. The stories are to show moral beliefs and what is right and wrong in general. Some of you can claim to be atheist, but still follow beliefs such as the 10 commandments.

The bible doesn't say that God directly wrote the passages, but as you can see, the Bible does say that God spoke directly what he wanted in the bible to those who wrote it down.

You can choose to believe that the bible is not to be taken literally, but the bible says it should be.

I fully understand that, and that makes sense but my point is then why is that morality of the bible right? If you are a christian that only believes half of the bible (and most of them believe less than that) how can you validate your belief on scripture if you already deem half of it to be invalid?

This is true for some of the bible, but not for the straight up laws that say someone should die if they do this, or someone should be mutilated if they do that. That is all very literal.

I believe in christainity, and I am not selective on what I believe what the the bible says. I don't believe it was meant for literal translation of the words used some 2000 years later. But I should also add I'm not a bible banger who can qoute scripture off the top of my head.
