Sigma 17-70mm

For that price, you should look at the tamron 17-50 f2.8 non vc, and then you could use the extra money towards a card or legacy glass etc. but what is your budget and what do you have now?

I was looking at the Tamron but I have heard awful things about it and how it doesn't connect with the camera all the time. I mean my budget is pretty flexible. Looking to spend no more 500 so I was gonna see if i could get the Canon 2nd hand. Right now I have a simple kit lens and a 50mm 1.8 and I am looking to get a wide angle and sell the kit lens.

I've used the Nikon mount sigma 17-70mm. It's a nice all around lens, it has great macro capabilities and is decently wide.

both of these are marginally better than the kit lens though, and not much wider. I haven't heard about any of the issues with the tamrons, and I know there are a lot of people on this site that use them, but I don't, so I can't really comment on that.

ok thanks! Yah I mean I think that a 15-85 is decently wide and could give a cool look to the footage, and so could a 17-70

Both the Canon and the Sigma are very sharp lenses. The Tamron is less sharp, but still very good, and has a constant aperture. The Canon is different from the other two because it is slower, but 2 mm wider (which is a lot).

The Tamron has the risk of not communicating well with your camera or having focusing issues, but so does the Sigma. If that happens, you should just return it, or in case of focusing issues have it calibrated.

If your priority is the option to go wide, you could go with the Canon. If your priority is shallow depth-of-field or low light shooting, go with the Sigma or Tamron.

None of these lenses are outstanding lenses, but I'd say the Tamron is the most interesting of the bunch because of the constant bright aperture combined with a relatively small size and decent sharpness. Like someone stated, these lenses are only marginally better than the kit lens.

I'd rather own a 24-105 or 24-120 f/4 than that Sigma 17-70 or Canon 15-85. If you want wide angle, I'd rather get a decent wide angle. If you buy for the compromise, you always end up spending more because you always end up wanting what your originally wanted.

decent wide angle = Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 or Tokina 12-24mm f/4.

never have I ever has such problems with my copy.

anyone have first hand experience with the tamron 17-50?
