Nikon vs Cannon - What DSLR do I get?

personally i've used a Canon before and i didn't like it much...and it broke easily as well.

you probably should've gone to m&a.

I thought about it, but I feel like there is more traffic to NSG. If it is necessary, mods move the thread.

-if it's mostly for video, and you want to go the cheapest route, get a t2i with some lenses (it'll still cost you upwards of $2,000)

I expected something like this to come. Kinda was looking for it. I will try to answer most of these soon so it is easier to help me.

1) What is your budget? How much money can you spend right away, and do you think you can get more money to invest in the future?
-I would like to spend less than $800. And for future I could spend more on lenses I get better. But right now I would stick with the basic package.

2) What experience do you already have with cameras? Have you ever even used one before? Have you helped your friend out with his camera? Have you owned your own?
-I have dabbled with friends cameras before. Never owned one of my own.


2) What gear, if any, do you currently have? (tripod, old camera lenses, mics, etc)
-No current gear.

4) What are you planning to shoot and how do you want to use your camera? Are you going to use this with the sole purpose of shooting skiing? or do you think you might try other stuff as well (movies, documentaries, short films, etc)
-I think I would use it mostly for photography. Not as much movie, but that may change when winter comes around. Right now I would probably stick to photography.

5) Do you want a camera that you can hand to your friends, that could or could not have film experience, and let them shoot you? or will you be doing all the filming?
-I would only hand it to a friend who knows what they are doing. I dont really trust people with valuables.


6) When filming skiing, how do you tend to shoot? (follow cams, leave it on record on a tripod and hike, film from a tripod, etc)
-Dont have experience filming skiing.

7) What computer do you currently have/use to edit (if not currently editing, what would you most likely use)? If you can provide specifics, such as hard drive space, RAM, processor size, that would be great.
-Ive got a Mac, old one, might get a new one soon. I use CS5 for editing photos.

7) What program do you currently edit on? How familiar are you with it (1- just learning; 10- I can make tutorials and know the keyboard layout)

they both make good cameras and good lenses if you are willing to spend the money, cheap stuff is just that.

The D3200 and t3i are probably gonna be your best choices if you want to buy a new camera. If you start to look at used gear you can find an older body that will have more "features" but also some downsides. I'd recommend that you get a D3200 body with a 35mm or 50mm prime and some other basic stuff like a memory card. Gets great reviews, but I'm a Nikon guy. You should go into a camera shop and hold both the t3i and D3200. Get whatever feels best in your hand.

Yeah I think we're at the point now where people should stop recommending the T2i. It's awesome for the price but I think the screen on the T3i is well worth the extra money. very useful for low and high angle shooting

Should I go for this today, or just wait, do more research and spend an extra hundred if I go for the T3i

you could also argue that having the best version of magic lantern is worth saving over $100 for the flip screen

I personally wouldn't. Having had one of the early ML builds on my T2i up until a couple weeks ago, I can honestly say I would sacrifice having the latest build to have an articulating screen.

Someone please tell me if I should jump on this. Or is it worth just waiting and spending an extra 100.

Go to a store and hold the cameras. A large part of the Nikon vs. Canon comes down to personal preference, the menu system, the button layout, even the way the shutter button feels.

If you are interested in the D3200, also have a look at the similarly priced D5100 and D90. The D3200 and D5100 are nice and compact entry-level cameras. The D90 has a slightly older sensor, but you get a lot more camera, so it's worth considering.

If you're looking for mostly video, Go with a t2i or a D5100 if you're looking on the cheap. Find one under 500$ and you should be getting a good deal.

Id like to buy new. I know it will be more money but I'd just rather do it that way. I would probably be shooting for mostly photography and less video as I said earlier. That being said, I am looking at getting the Nikon D5100 from B&H. They have a good deal on a kid it seems right now.

Someone earlier said this is a good camera for video. Seeing as I wont be doing as much video as photography am I spending too much on a more video oriented camera or is it just really good at video and photos?

I'd say that the D3200 would work better for you than the D5100.

Newer sensor and processor. The camera got an 81 on Dxomark which is crazy for a crop sensor. I'd take the awesome sensor of the 3200 over the flip-out screen of the 5100.

Eh the difference is $50 between the two. Well worth it for the better sensor and new processor. By your logic he might as well get the D3100. Much cheaper than the other 2.

For someone who spells canon as "cannon" i'd recommend not spending 500 bucks or thereabout on any camera, but rather spend a modest amount on a used DSLR body from a trusted site, and getting a few nice lenses to use instead. That way, they can make a better decision on a camera body when they find out what they like to shoot, if they want to do more video, sports, landscapes, etc... It will allow them to get some nicer lenses from the start.

Maybe. It really depends on how much video the OP actually wants to shoot. Older bodies won't work nearly as well for video but at the same time a new body will be garbage for video as well without an expensive setup (i.e. stabilization and lenses). D90 is always a great option.

That's the other thing... if you're NOT going to really be doing much video, but want the option, AND you want a good camera of sorts, get an older DSLR.
