If you believed in trickle down economics, you would hand that person an application to McDonalds.

You see, at some point, a man was willing to risk his hard earned money in a business that he believed would be successful. That business WAS successful, and the man took the profit from it, and re-invested it in making his business larger and more profitable. This, employing more people, who also profited from this man's investment. This went on over and over again, where the man became very rich and successful, therefore, everyone working for him also became successful (at one level or another), thus, this man's initial investment trickled down to help literally millions and millions of other people.

What you are advocating is Socialism. In that just because I have been successful (to some level) that it is my duty to and/or responsibility to give what I EARNED to someone less successful.

That's called enabling.

The only reason people are homeless begging for money on the street is because it works. If we all simply stopped allowing them to continue living life like this, by no longer giving them money then they would have 2 options, 1. get a job, 2. Die.

Sounds heartless, but I do have compassion. I care about the people on the bottom who are willing to work hard to improve their lives, if they are just looking for a hand out, forget it.

true story, a few weeks ago a women walked up to me as I was getting in my car and asked if I could spare some change? I said yes and gathered up a handful of quarters/nickels/dimes etc. Picking out the loonies, and twonies. She walked away before I could even give it to here. small change wasn't even worth her time. She could just go ask someone else and hopefully get a 5 spot.

donations to homeless people isnt socialism, thats a choice. socialism is forcing you to give your money to poor people. so they can mooch off you and other hardworking people. id rahter pick who gets my money, so i can give it to people who actually are trying to get back on their feet and support themselves. not people living off the system.

Your right, the 5 homeless kids I used to chill with, would sit on the side of the road saying Stranded, need food.

Oh, they just had a permanent camp site in a river bed, had food stamps, they used it as a means to get money to party that night, or get another pack of smokes. If I tell a man, hey come in with me to the grocery stores, Ill buy you a sandwich, and they refuse, and just ask for money, fuck them.

Also, before you say anything, know I do a good bit of work with the homeless, and they regularly brag about making 80-100 a day from panhandling, and how they get some booze or whatever else, and just kick it.

Also, apparently it's a cool thing for the wealthier kids from the city near here to 'bum' for the summer, and pretend to be homeless.

If anyone knows Ventura County, or Thousand Oaks california knows what I'm talking about.

Homeless people who choose the streets only do so because they are lazy and/or struggling with an addiction. Real homeless people who just choose to live an alternative lifestyle usually try to separate themselves from "those" types and live a self sustaining lifestyle.

I would without a second of hesitation choose, in lieu of jail, to go set up a shelter in the woods, preferably near a river, and live comfortably off of what I can hunt, farm, and gather. The problem for most bums is that that sort of lifestyle still takes a great deal of work to get by. You can shake a cup all day in the wilderness and nothing will happen. Do the same thing on a busy street and you can make 100 dollars in a day. My problem with that is taking money I havent earned. It's always made me extremely uncomfortable to do so.

Many people who don't want to give to the poor because they say they are "lazy" may not be very hardworking themselves I'm sure many poor people (not bums) work way harder then many of us ever will in order just to feed their families and pay the rent. Be generous and people may help you back, you may even make a big difference.

i will happily donate to a charity/cause that goes towards helping the homeless, but i will not give money to someone walking down the street asking for money. if i am giving out money to help others, i want to be sure that it is being used to help them, not buying them booze/alcohol and perpetuating their cycle of homelessness.

why the fuck would I give them my money? They make more money on average per day than I ever have, (except for one job maybe). Then most of them go and blow it on booze and drugs.

I understand that alcoholism is a disease but we have (in canada at least) free treatments for anyone who is willing to go to them.

If someone is homeless for a legitimate reason I really feel sorry for them, but they will likely take advantage of the services we offer. most beggars on the street choose that lifestyle and I will not help support it.

I've seen a couple pretty raw documentaries on this stuff, and it is true that a lot of them have have some messed up childhoods or mental illnesses, and it's sad. I just would rather support organizations that try to help these people rather than just help fund their self-destruction
