Momentum Power: 300 mpg car

Hey everyone. This is a company that is trying to get their GREAT idea started up. The car gets 300 miles per gallon. Right now, they are trying to get investments through indiegogo.com. If you could check out their idea or even give 10-25 bucks, they woould really appreciate it. It's gonna change the world!

Let's be realistic and frank then. That was a pitiful presentation. I read the entire page, watched the entire movie and I know NOTHING about the project other than their goal is to get 300 MPG and they felt it necessary to spend 50% of their presentation explaining how many connections the array contains rather than give me some useful information. That tells me nothing, every car company in the world would "like" to get 300 MPG and they hire world class engineers from around the world that specialize in the technology. They haven't done it in 100 years, but in 9 months this garage group has the answer? How? Tell me something interesting.

How far are they now? Can they go 150 miles on a gallon? While we're at it, a gallon of WHAT? Gasoline? Ethanol? Vegetable Oil? Propane? Chocolate milk? They only talk about propane and electricity offhand and mention that somehow your car and house can connect to each other. How much would one car be? Why is this better than a hybrid? How much propane would this use? How fast? How much power does the system create? Do I need to charge the car initially?

Basically tell me something about the car....anything....at all. If they want half a million dollars, they had better give better than an 8th grade level presentation.

The car can get 300 mpg right now. They just need the money to make a better/second prototype to put everything together better into a street legal car without the stuff hanging out the back and front.

I have watched this go through all the stages from the very begininng in that wood looking box to getting it in the car and a lot of good work has been put into it and this idea will work if they get the money they need to put everything they have together better.

On your other question, it runs on propane. It says this in the end of the video where it says, "We are on track to deliver an estimated 300 miles per gallon on propane."

I'm sorry, it is actually mostly electricity but the fuel instead of gas (such as in a prius) it is propane.

forklifts run off of propane. not sure about the mileage, but I wouldn't drive one very far.

It's not going to change the world. Manufacturers already could be vastly increasing their fuel economy numbers, but that is not what customers actually want.

1994 Honda Civic
1.6L 4-cylinder
25 city / 32 hwy
Curb Weight - ~2,400 lbs.
Passenger Volume - 85 cubic feet

2012 Honda Civic
1.8L 4-cylinder
28 city / 36 hwy
Curb Weight - ~2,800 lbs.
Passenger Volume - 95 cubic feet

Our shit keeps getting bigger and heavier, because that is what consumers want. Bigger is "better" to the consumers. You never see vehicles downsizing to improve their fuel economy. Each new model redesign gains in size and weight. Subcompacts of today share the same dimensions of compacts 20 years ago.

Studies exist that calculate that a 5%-20% weight reduction on a small car would result in a fuel economy improvement of 2%-8%. The truth is that while MPGs drive sales as an added benefit within the class, what really sells vehicles is features that add weight and decrease efficiency.

id rather drive my jetta TDi. $40 to fill it up, 700 miles per tank, drives like a real car and will sit and smoke the tires if i want it to. its pretty fast, nice leather interior with great build quality and it doesnt look retarded. a prius gets like 5mpg better and handles like shit, looks retarded, is slow as fuck, and runs on little 10 inch go-cart wheels. da fuck would you want that for?

The biggest reason for cars increasing in size and weight is safety. They add a tremendous amount of weight.

And a bigger size allows for larger crumple zones, again safety.

Of course there are the comforts people demand from these days but it's mostly down to safety.

And frankly I rather have a safe car then one that trades better mileage for the sake of safety.

Airbag systems do not effectively add that much weight. For example an airbag itself weighs somewhere in the range of 5-10 lbs. While it is some weight, an entire system including the deployment sensors would only really add 100-200 lbs.

Increased interior dimensions are not congruent with your crumple zone theory. The crumple zones are underhood or in the trunk areas. Passenger compartments are framed in a shell with higher structural integrity. A crumple zone within the passenger compartment would be extremely counter-productive and be absurdly dangerous.

But structural bracing and crumple zones add way more in terms of weight.


And in the past 20 years the overall size has grown a lot more then the interior size.
Compare for instance the doors on a twenty year old car with a brand new car.

I wasn't even talking about crumple zones in in interior space...what are you on?
I know how they work and that wouldn't make sense.

Yes they have become bigger and heavier, mostly for the sake of safety they also became more streamlined.

My post was referencing the interior dimensions of the same model of car over the span of 10-15 years and how across the board, interior volume dimensions have increased. The interior volume of a 2012 Civic is the same as the interior volume of a 1994 Accord.

I referenced two dimensions: curb weight, which is a general indicator of vehicle size but can be impacted by the addition of safety features, and interior dimensions, which are increasing dimensions that are unrelated in any way to safety and indicate how our vehicles continue to grow in size.

i have actually driven this car along with many other cars...
honestly this car is a dope car to drive, it has a rediculous amount of power and tork. that being said. the reason for propane is because it is a self relying engine which is mostly electric but there is a small propane engine in it which just helps get everything started up. Propane burns 70% cleaner than gasoline and it burns at the same rate or less being that you dont know how much you will need to use that engine which is not alot. In the future plans the cars will not at all be as small and stupid looking as smart cars and priuses. Alot of the models will look exactly like cars that are driving out there today including a sedan, an SUV and many other models. And we obviously all want more snow and better air to breathe and our freaking children or childrens children not to have to deal with our global warming problem down the road when it is unfixable.

and Lawrence is 100% correct the biggest reason (not the only) for cars increasing in size and weight is directly related to safety increases. The crash tests cars have to pass today are way more difficult from decades ago. Stuff like the IIHS frontal offset added tons of weight to cars around the front wheel wells to protect the front occupants legs from getting crushed. When you start talking about stuff like antilock brakes, stability/traction control, air bags, side impact beams, much larger brakes > wheels > tires - it all adds to significant weight increase

Its easy to say air bags add an easy 100lbs - between the driver/ passenger (face and knee), side curtain, head air bags, sensors, wiring, and support brackets it adds up quick

Lots of cars now have stronger, heavier frames and cross members/braces for the increased crash protection which adds huge weight to the vehicle

electric engines will beat any combustion engine in tork.. and honestly its only 10 dollars what is 10 dollars to any of you who buy skis and bindings which is way over a couple hundred dollars. why would you want to drive a car that is deteriorating our environment if you could be helping it by spending 10 dollars.

If your so worried about pollution, you shouldn't even be stressing the amount of pollution cars contribute, when the major contributor to it is the amount of cattle produced for consumption.

In fact, the amount of cattle raised for consumption produces more co2 than all of the cars in the world combined.

Btw, cars like this have been designed, tested, prototypes/produced. There have been several cases in which the inventors were murdered. This project will be bought out/shut down way before it gets far.

Also, consumers don't want 300mpg cars. If you tell a person who complains about fuel, hey, here's a care that gets 75mpg, you just need to downgrade in size, they just 'cant' sacrifice their SUV because of the needs of groceries and shopping. Even though its bullshit, considering I can do 2 weeks of grocery shopping, and strap a fucking bike frame/wheel-set to my back, and ride the 8-12 miles home no problem.

People dont want to sacrifice/give up what they think is a given.

Those sure as shit aren't normal car batteries - and its not necessarily the battery but the huge quantity of batteries a hybrid car needs to operate that makes it awful for the environment

I dont understand why you people don't see the up- side out of this. This car burns for effciently. This means you are putting less green house gases into our atmosphere and more money into your pocket. I hate how people just like to criticize things. You guys should be trying to support something that actually could help our country. We would stop having to rely on foreign countries for oil supplies.
