and Lawrence is 100% correct the biggest reason (not the only) for cars increasing in size and weight is directly related to safety increases. The crash tests cars have to pass today are way more difficult from decades ago. Stuff like the IIHS frontal offset added tons of weight to cars around the front wheel wells to protect the front occupants legs from getting crushed. When you start talking about stuff like antilock brakes, stability/traction control, air bags, side impact beams, much larger brakes > wheels > tires - it all adds to significant weight increase
Its easy to say air bags add an easy 100lbs - between the driver/ passenger (face and knee), side curtain, head air bags, sensors, wiring, and support brackets it adds up quick
Lots of cars now have stronger, heavier frames and cross members/braces for the increased crash protection which adds huge weight to the vehicle
