I came to the conclusion that I sort of hate what is currently happening.
Whiny bitch music is making a come back. I loved the last phase. Pheona Apple, Alanis Morsette, Sheral Crow, Jewel... Stuff was pretty sweet if you were a 12 year old girl.
Anyway, the leading female is making a comeback in a serious way.
Additionally, southern rock is coming up in full force. I don't see country coming in to full mainsteem but the band The Alabama Shakes was by far the best received group at SXSW. And to top it off, it's also a chick lead (even if she does sound like a man).
As far as the electronic world goes. The music like passion pit is on the way out. That was a great up beat trent while it lasted. I think the group Electric Guest will be the last ones to make any noise there.
Indi rock is also on the road to death as the sweet hiptster tunes get replaced by the angry chick music. I think Grouplove is gong to be the last new group to make noise here. I expect Gotye and a few bands like the Killers and Snowpatrol to make a bit more noise here, but I don't foresee any other bands coming in and taking it by storm.
The sounds of the 80's seem to be coming back in a serious way. A la m83. I'm not sure if this makes me want to rip off my ears or not. I kinda liked depech mode, but I don't know if I want the full genre back.
Finally, music has made a comeback. Pure, beautiful music. I love and hate this. GY!BE has been one of my favorites for the last 10 years so half my pandora radio stations include them, Sigor Ros, and the likes. But the trend is becoming more instruments, less vocals. Even the Gorillaz are following suit (I'm cool with this, Blur is my favorite band). But if you start looking for upcoming music, Mogwai is suddenly all over the place. m83's new stuff follows suit and there was a startling amount of bands making the SXSW lists that sounded pretty similar.
The world of hip hop.... I don't know. Saw some stuff from this Bob guy. I liked him.
So, music videos to accompany this.
Chick music: (I can actually handle Kimbra --- Gotye's alter ego)
Southern Rock:
Electronic: (but not really electronic at all... more like if passion pit had existed in the 60's-some of the other songs are a bit more... )
Indi Rock:
The 80's:
And finally, Music: (mogwai has been around a while, but is suddenly now getting popular)
I think the low end theory crew...flying lotus, samiyam, kinda the whole brainfeeder label. Avante-garde jazz/electronic/trip hop. Making huge waves in the festivals.
A favorite of mine, B. Lewis.
listen to this album all the way through. if you want one or two songs to listen to, pick code(x) -- if you want to party your face off -- or les saisons -- if you want a BEAUTIFUL glitch-soul hip hop instrumental.
I don't really know but I fucking love where hip hop/rap is headed. I expect the influence of MBDTF to continue throughout music, in more genres than hip hop.
