Any Canadian spent more than 6 months in the US in a year?

I'm trying to go to the US for the whole winter next winter but the maximum duration of a visitor visa is 6 months. I'm trying to figure out how to extend my visa because I would like to stay for summer too. Anyone has ever done it? I've been googling around for a while and it's pretty confusing.

Apply for work visa? How much was the visitor visa and how hard/long did it take to get it?

You need to come back to Canada for at least a day then reapply. I'll ask one of the immigration officers in a minute if there is any way to avoid this.

So if I go for like say 4 months and then come back to Canadia for a week I could go back for 6 months?

As far as I know that's correct. There may be ways to circumvent that but I don't know from a canadian customs side. Just give your border service a call and you will find out pretty quickly.
