Who here has started to invest some of their money?

So I don't have a whole lot in savings, however I do have a few grand that I would love to see grow till I'm ready to buy a house/nice car. Basically what I'm saying is, I've got a few grand that I'm willing to invest and not be able to touch for 10 years or so. Basically, where should I start? Anyone else here in their early 20's that have started to invest some of their money? When I say "see my money grow", I know that 3 grand won't turn into a million. But cash sitting in savings for ten years will gain chump change which is why I'm looking to invest and earn some real interest. So for my fellow NSer's who have started invested at a young age, what was you approach? Like I said, not expecting to get rich, just better off than if I had let my money sit in Chase savings and gain .01% interest.

here is my only problem with buying a house as an investment. is that it is a long term investment unless you payed outright for it.


so you have have a 15 year mortgage you arent going to get your maximum gain for 15 years. granted you could sell before that but you wont get as much.

Give the money to a broker. I made a 12% gain last year doing just that. The fees and such aren't really too significant when you factor in the money you could potentially make

Can't really say I can fully trust brokers. Then again I supose their bonuses are linked to their clients.

I'm still suprised no-one has brought up forex trading. Playing the currency markets can bring some great profits to small time traders due to the leverage most brokers provide. For investing $2,000 you'll be able to typically trade with $200,000 (1:100 leverage). Most brokers give free demo accounts out as well, so you don't have to risk your own money straight away. Obviously due to the leverage, if you don't manage your risk correctly you'll likely hit some pretty large losses.

The only thing I invest in is marijuana. I basically loan money to dealers and or friends and get interest back I make more money than I would in a CD. I have helped move big herb through my town and so far and on top of it I have made profit somewhere around $250. I just started doing this around a month ago. Everyone I have loaned money to I have personally known so for me its a safe and easy way to make money. Fuck my bank I get .01% interest.

I put 10% of my checks into TSP.  I have an allotment set up to take it out automatically and it's tax free, with a pretty steady return around 10%.  If I wait till I'm 59 to redeem it it's completely tax free but if I take it before then uncle sam gets his fair share.  My employers hook it up with the investments.

Oh shit-iPhone posted by accident! I meant to add.... My taxes are really high...2.53% which means I pay about 11-12gs a year (or an extra grand a month). Yeah it sucks, but you can deduct some from income tax at year end. My house has gone up in value 50k in 6 months due to a housing boom driven by a crazy job market down here in Houston... (I work in oil)....but as I said above-you gotta be smart about it. You don't need 20%.... You can do 5%... But will have to pay PMI which is a lot! I did an 80-10-10 which is a good way to avoid that-you get a second lien for 10%..... But anyway-all this talk is irrelevant to the OP. But property is king-I aim to be mortgage free by 40.

Westcheter ny lived there too highest property taxes in the USA or it used to be 2 years ago I'm not sure where rates at now but I pay well over 50 G's year for my house.

are you saying $70 per full transaction for 1 investment out of the five. Because scotttrade fees you $5 buy and $5 sell, obviously no middleman here.

Heres a screen shot of one portfolio I have, small cap tech companies. I track them with yahoo.finance for ease. I started on 10-18-2011 with $1000 equally weighted in each stock, and i have not gone back an reset the weights due to transaction costs. 58% aint bad, but obviously very risky. THere was one point i think i was 58% in the red.

If anyone is interested in some long term shit I guess it wouldn't be a bad time to invest in CP stock. They recently brought on Hunter Harrison as CEO so things can only go up from here.

no scottrade is 7 for straight market orders or at least mine is...so every buy and sell is $14 bucks, of you buy and sell 5 stocks that 70$ just in fees, if you only have 1000 to invesy thats 7% in fees off the top
