Colour Correction Graphs/Charts

I think that you get used to seeing what looks good, and eventually you can just sorta gauge how things should look. Part of it is an artistic choice as well. This is coming from a photo standpoint, but after playing with some video grading and color correction this last week, it's pretty similar.

What are you looking for? "accurate" colors specifically?

I don't really mean color grading(I think), I mean getting it to have the highest dynamic range, being at the top of the whites but not being overdone so it overexposes and having it black but not overdone so parts that aren't meant to be black become black, I think because I end up with poor footage in the past I've tried to correct it and ended up overdoing it, so I guess that's why it'd help, yeah I'm looking for accurate colours.

do you use video scopes in fcp?

i always use the parade histogram and the circle one for saturation levels because if you stare at it too long your eyes adjust and you can possibly overdo it. so i use those to make sure im not goin overboard and i also toggle graded and ungraded a lot too

I use a videoscope to get my blacks and whites where I want them.

When it comes time for grading, I just go with what my eyes think are good.

I fucking love using all of the graphs. learnt how to use these well and I have realy improved my game as far as the quality of my footage.


Heres an example of how my left screen always looks when I edit. This is for a short film Im working on, I color corrected, graded and added a practical effect on the walking signal.

I use the waveform monitor to place my black limit, vectorscope to see what direction to compensate color to have a balance that I like. I use the histograms and waveform a bit deeper than most people, and this is huge for me, I use it to know when my colors are blocking.
