DIY question - waterproof case helmetcam

so guys.

i have a POV vio, and i really like it. the obvious downsides are obvious (bulky, batteries) but i like it overall for its versatility and quality.

now i want to go surfing and the website said you would more likely than not need its official waterproof case (~100$) for that. would be no real problem, but it looks so fucking goofy and cheap that i wonder if there are alternatives. the recording unit is waterproof up to 3 ft and the camera head up to 30 ft.

so the question is: has someone ever done something? and how can i cover the recording unit with the cable extending from it? like how could i (non-permament obviously) seal any waterproof casing and still have the camera head cable going out of it?

obviously, if its too big of a hassle, i will just sack up and pay the price, but maybe some crafty guy on here can help me out.

Throw some zip lock bags on and duct tape the seems. Just poke the cable through and then seal that with duct tape. It may be risky but you wont be able to do it for any cheaper. Use at least 3 bags though

as long as you keep the bags air free on the inside, it should work alright. Several bags for safety, keep each bag seamed with duct tape where the cable pokes through. It probably would be easier to access the controls too (link to their case?)

I have done it with phones and stuff for kayaking and been fine. Just take your time doing it and really make sure you have a good seal on where the cable goes. If it is already somewhat water proof you shouldn't have any issues as long as you take your time.

To test it though you could put it in water less than 3 feet. If the water gets in you have a an issue with your bags but no damage

If you are going to take the plastic bag approach, consider putting the cable out through the corner of the bag and squirting some silicone caulking inside to seal it. You should be able to peel the silicone away after use, and it will form a much better seal than duct tape.
