Lately on NS i've been seeing a lot of threads on religion. While I feel that the majority of NS'ers are Atheistic, I decided to make a thread that focuses instead on Theism; specifically Mormonism.

I think that a huge part of life is not only tolerance but acceptance; and for those of you who are curious or just wanna butt heads feel free to ask questions or discuss. Ill only respond to the questions I feel are serious and will attempt to answer them to the best of my abilities.

I appreciate you making this thread, and I think everyone needs to chill a little bit. In no way to I agree with your religious choice, but I do respect it. I was raised a Lutheran, and it was awesome. Very chill.

that's not true and it doesn't make sense at all... if you want to trash his religion for being false, you damned well make sure that what your saying isn't false as well.

the reason slc has a high homeless teen population is because kids come out to their parents as gay. mormons are all about loving family, right? well if you're gay then your excommunicated until you decide not to be gay anymore. mormons are all about acceptance and love for sure but you have to be straight and devout to the mormon church which includes a "stipend", aka giving the church a portion of your money every year.

doesn't sound like you were truly and atheist which i would define as someone who thinks rationally by looking at all the evidence to decide what is known and what is unknown. not someone who reads the doctrine of a religion and decides that that religion contains ultimate truth because of their own emotional experiences. you also mentioned you were disillusioned with life, that it had a "dreariness" to it. it sounds like you embraced mormonism not to seek the truth, but to find fulfillment in your life. in which case i urge you to seek fulfillment in life some other way and not devote part of your life sponsoring a church that seeks to impose its own system and doctrine upon the world.

i highly suggest people to look into why utah has the highest rates of people who use antidepressants yet the state ranks the highest in surveys as the happiest... and people might want to read into why Utah had/has been battling a major meth problem among housewives and Utah women in general.

Have you read "Under the Banner of Heaven" by Jon Krakauer? Do you find anything factually inaccurate about it?

Do you think it's suspect that Joseph Smith was a treasure hunter and alleged (possibly convicted, the records are unclear) con artist before he started mormonism?

Mormonism is the biggest crock of shit ever (so is all of christianity) but I mean come on, people living on planets? magic underwear? Black people are black because they are cursed? Also Joseph Smith was known to a be a con-man before he even started the religion.

This is a pretty good educational video on what the church teaches.

threads for the answer. I asked my mormon friend about Under the Banner of Heaven and she basically said that the people in that were extremists but the historical part is unfortunately true.

How many original founders were there? My mother told me that my great great grandfather was one of the originals. I want to say there were 8, but I could be wrong.
I am 100% serious, our family is no longer mormon, but far back in my family tree we were mormon.

also threads for an answer, and i figured i would chime in:

first off, i think everyone has the right to believe what they want. i find the mormon beliefs a bit awkward, hazy, unclear, and what have you but hey they believe in it and they stick to it, just like many other religions.  however, its when people try to force their religion upon you and are ignorant and arrogant about it...such as those mormon missionaries getting schooled by the black guy in that video on the first page. 

i don't have a problem with mormons, i have several mormon friends and a black friend who actually converted (which i still shake my head about) but im cool as long as they are cool, just like anyone else with any other beliefs and views no matter how off they are

i think anyone who wants to think/be part of/talk about religion should first extensively study Phenomenology, Existentialism, and any general metaphysics for that matter. All of its fucking stupid and made it. But i understand why, people, many just like the op need something to believe so that they feel their life has meaning. Is the observation of the natural world, its interactions, its patterns, its beauty, not significant enough to make you want to lead a long peaceful life?

yeah it's questionable..do i give a fuck..no..I don't spend time bashing people for what they believe in..I worry about how I can better myself and be empathetic to other people's situations..(granted this is not the case 24/7..but I would ultimately like to strive for it)..it's funny how computer screens will turn humble respectable people, into disrespectful, trash talking, beings.

I have a Mormon friend and he told me some disturbing things about their historical view of black. Is it true that ionce in the Mormon faith blacks were considered fallen angels and as a result could not share in the benefits of being part of the Mormon religion?

Basically the LDS church used to promote it. Joseph Smith had about 40 wives and he believed it was a crucial part of his teachings. Then the government said it was not okay and the LDS church agreed. However there are still mormon polygamist colonies like Colorado City. The problem is that the church changed their teachings and pissed off a lot of crazies.

Polygamist colonies are extremely messed up. Boys who are mating competition are loaded into buses and dropped off in cities so they will never return. Girls have basically no rights. TLC paints a pretty unrealistic picture of the culture as a whole. The bottom line though is that there is an imbalance between males and females, which limits the genetic diversity. Also All the mothers work at home, and the dad makes the only income. This means that they take in thousands of dollars in child support every year (only one of the wives is registered, the rest are technically single mothers).

Polygamy is BS
Mormonism is BS

Hey Guys I am LDS also. I understand you don't enjoy the LDS church at all. To be truthful, I don't know much about it, being born into the church and being thirteen, but I do know that I am HAPPY because of it. And Also to tell the truth there are some things I am unable to answer myself. But I do know one thing. We are all on this website for a reason, because WE ALL LOVE SKIING. None of my friends are LDS. I have one jewish friend, one atheist, and the others have no religion, But we are all friends because WE LIKE TO SKI. So to all of you, lets just find a way to be happy.
