Best skis for an instructor?

So, i'm going to Japan for the season and learning to be an instructor, taking my exam in january then teaching until april.
I currently have a pair of K2 fujatives from '06 i think, they're black & white pair, anyway, thinking about getting a new pair for teaching with, anyone have any ideas/advice?

How tall are you? What are the conditions at your mountain? What type of terrain will you be teaching on?

im 5 11, im guessing mostly groomed but, apparantly Japan gets a ton of pow too, so it needs to be able to handle that too

This is what the company i'll be working for says:

The type of ski used varies depending on terrain and style of skiing. The categories of skis available include Big Mountain, All Mountain, Park & Pipe / Freestyle and Carving. The best ski for you will depend on the main style of skiing you will be doing. For the purposes of our training programs a versatile All Mountain or Carving ski will be best. A good amount of side-cut and medium waist width (68 – 75mm) underfoot will allow you to demonstrate the required techniques as well as ski bumps and powder off piste. The length of the ski should be somewhere between your chin and nose.

Well pretty much that.
If you are skiing pow you should get more wider than 75mm!

I'd say got with ON3P JEFFREY's or Line skis: Sir Francis Bacon's

I did a course like the one your talking about and did half of it on park skis, then my instructors managed to persuade me to get some all mountain carving skis (non twin tip) and they felt so much nicer than my park skis everywhere (except the park obviously) so i would say get a pair of all mountain carving skis first and since your in J pow try and get some pow skis too!

i love the graphic on the SF bacon, but looking at it the blend seems to be the better ski, remember i'd have to be teaching people on them, alot of the time on groomers...

Them dynastars look amazing for groomers, not sure they'd be any good off piste, but i could always take my trusty fujatives with me, got a double ski bag anyway

post up a thread on snowheads.com , it's a british ski forum(traditional skiing) so the majority will be more knowledgable on what to get for skiing groomers, post a thread saying what course you're doing and they'll be able to recommend a ski, and if you do plan on getting on3p skis you can either buy them direct from ON3P, or wait until they release their swedish distributor this fall.

id say alpha 1s if you want a versatile ski. its not a noodle, has a fast base, can carve really well due to the low turning radius and the waist width is nearly as they recommend. plus it wont rooster tail in your students face, like most other twin tips.

Something that is not a twin tip-ideally a performance/all mtn carving ski. When I was an instructor I used a pair of Fischer Progressor 9's. You want something which is good on groomed/hard snow & bumps. These are the conditions you will spend the most time, and expected to demonstrate good technique. The last thing you want to do be doing an exam and being on a ski which makes it more difficult.

Also, examiners don't like park rats, so they will mark you tougher on twin tip, even though it is probably not intentional.

You need to get some proper carving skis, if it's anything like the course I did then I'd seriously say you need some. Your best option is getting some proper carving skis and some pow ski's unfortunately, you're not gonna be able to get anything that does both jobs well enough for what you have ahead of you.

Buy some old race stock slaloms skis or gs skis for cheap, then buy some decent pow skis like mentioned

Speaking generally, the average japanese newbie skier isn't interested in slaying pow in the trees. They want to lay down beautiful measured carving tracks on the groomers.

Really you want 2 pairs of skis. Any ski that's going to be useful when it comes to doing demos on hardpack is probably going to suck balls when it's 4ft deep in the trees.

Who are you teaching? assuming assuming because your a new instructor its younger kids/ beginners prepare to have your skis run over a ton. If you want to keep them mint that's not going to happen.. Personal experience I've had 2 sets of skis where the the top sheet has seen major damage an gashes almost to the core, as well as chunks come out of the base at the back of the ski due to being run into from behind. I taught mainly 4 -6 year olds even though i was a level 2 CSIA instructor.

My suggestion.

Buy a really nice set of all mountain skis that you can shred the pow and also rail on groomers for the rare opportunity that you get to ski on your own or when you get a client that actually knows what they are doing. Use you 6 year old fugitives to teach the majority of your beginner lessons on.

what age and level will you be teaching. if its young kids you can pretty much get away with any ski cause youll be teaching wedge turns and stuff. if you are teaching higher level people then you probably want a carving ski

Some shitty and cheap carving ski.

As a level-1 you're probably going to spend your entire day walking around with little kids on the magic carpet.  In the event that you end up with adults, they're probably going to spend half the day walking on your topsheets with their skis.

Seriously.  You don't need a nice ski unless you're working with advanced adults.  And that's not gonna be the case if you're only a level-1.

the angle at which the tip/tail is bent up is usually what decides wether it will rooster tail or not. but the alphas, due to the early taper have the widest part not at the beginning of the tip/tail, but before that, causing less hooking i.e. snow getting on the tails and spraying up.

depending on who you are teaching, i would not go and drop the cash on new skis just to teach in. they will take some shit. i say use your current skis for teaching, buy a new pair and take them out when you are done
