Agnosticism

Kind of a science/religion thread. I feel like its the most modest religion since you are basically admitting you do not know where the universe came from, and thats fine. Personally im a secular humanist/Agnostic but i am fairly open minded to all religions, excluding mormonism, i have 0 respect for their religion. After reading the Cosmos and watching the full series on netflix its hard to make a direct stance on belief in anything and not alot of people understand that.
A cool thing i read that kind of puts the entire thing into perspective, and gives reason.

Theism: You do not know every event that has ever occured and everything that has ever existed therefore, you do not have proper reason to state whether or not there is a god/gods

Atheism: Same thing really just stating that there is no god/gods

Agnosticism: You accept that you dont know everything so you follow the current knowledge and evidence.

ages 3-7 i was catholic and 7-10 mormon, and my step mom is muslim, so i have a decent understanding of the major religions. I try to give them a chance but i never can find myself to just have blind faith play a role in my core beliefs.

When i try to explain my beliefs to other people i become a heathen and they just look at me like a fucking asshole because i dont necessarily believe in a god.

Im sure there is some other NS'ers with similar thoughts/issues

higgs boson, is the thing with the most resemblance to god that I will ever beleive. and even then, Im waiting for the case reviews to make it scientifically acceptable as the truth.

the higgs boson as well as every other elementary particle, yes. Not enough observation/research has been performed on it to fully understand its ultimate role

I try to completely detach myself from religion. I fell like no terms really define my beliefs. Just don't care.

My religion is that Your political beliefs and religious beliefs are your's and your's alone and should not be shared unless asked. With that said i have no set religion just my own set of beliefs. My veiw on religious texts is that they are not to be taken literally and are meant more as extremely wise self help books. And if you are a good person you will be rewarded. whatever god there is doesnt care about petty little things like premarital sex or drinking alcohol. Reincarnation and eventual liberation from life death cycle or Nirvana or moksha as some call it.

i am an atheist currently surrounded by theists but i think about what they say and accept that they have their beliefs. you have to be chill about it especially if you expect others to be chill about you

When you Believe in nothing, you are nothing. It's a really difficult question, but with no belief, you are truly nothing; that's why I feel athiesm is (obviously) very radical. There are some really good responses in this thread, but here's mine: be well, do good work, and keep in touch! That's what Garrison Keelor says at the end of every Writer's Almanac on NPR, and that's the bottomline of what I try to do with my life.

True, there's more philosophical ideas and examples thereof throughout history teaching virtues to abiding followers, but what really matters are your actions in this moment. What you do now is the only thing that influences your thoughts and ideas later, besides others' thoughts and ideas.

Basically, follow the golden rule, no matter what religion or whatever group it is attached to. "Do unto others as you would have done unto you." Disregarding its role in Christianity, the Bible is a great work of literature with much to learn from, whether you believe in Jesus and his disciples or not. I see it as an amazing story from which we all can learn a great deal, much like a myth; but know that myths only shoot as far as they go.

i try to be as collected and open minded as possible but when someone asks me if im a christian and i say "Not exactly" their response is immediately coherent with "You're a bad person"

and to everyone else, i try to live by the same moral standards as most practicing Christians. In the end if there is a god and a heaven, i feel as if it wont matter as long as you're a good person. It just grinds my gears when people tell me you if there is a heaven, you're not getting in unless you believe in it, regardless if you're a saint or not.

PErsonally I don't believe in religion although I respect most of them and understand their meanings but I only believe in the perfection of our universe. I mean, we are all in this box (the universe) which is a perfect mixture of matter and we are just this, matter. We all come from the sun, whoever you are.
I guess people should believe in Light, heat, gravity, time.. Things that actually rule our universe.
IMO !!

As I said I respect other religions, if you look at the philosophical aspect of it, most of the religions have good in them.

I'm currently agnostic and in my opinion if there is a god-like higher power it most certainly isn't one of the hundreds that humanity has construed it as during our existence.

I heard it the best on The Cleveland Show actually. It was the episode where Jr's family didn't accept te fact that he believed in religions. He used Brian (dog) as an example for atheists. He said that Brian is an atheist and sets it for everyone to know it, and is usually against religion, and sets out for everyone to know that religion is wrong too. Jr's view was that there just isn't anything, anything that he can prove to say the least. He respects all other religions, and just tries to lead a normal life. Seriously the best way someone has ever put any atheist/religion debate. One would have to watch the episode to understand it all. But it stuck with me, and Jr's view is how I roll

on topic:

i guess you'd class me as agnostic, since while i do not have any set religious beliefs, i do not rule out the possibility that their is a god. i was raised a catholic but i find that i have far too open a mind just to follow a set of rules for my whole life, simply because i am told it is the 'right' path to lead. i am intelligent enough to know right from wrong without being governed by a set of rules.

as someone said before i do not believe the bible should be taken literally but i do believe in the help it can provide to people and if it helps, people should take what they want from it.

i had a lot more to say but i got distracted in the middle of typing this for like half an hour so i've completely lost my train of thought, but ill come back to it maybe
