Cheap cars that wont embarrass you?

have a low low budget for a car and don't want to be embarrased when i pull up to places, would just rather blend in.  Only thing i can thing of is a older jeep wranger.  Any other suggestions?

You can definitely find great prices on subarus. The good thing about those is they are usually at MOST 2nd owner

find a clean 4x4 toyota pickup, like 1994 and older which are all over the place for $3k or less. Do routine maintnence and if its a 22re it will run forever and will go pretty much anywhere

BMW E30's are super great looking cars, but are a bitch to repair. A buddy of mine has a VW sedan that runs pretty well, AWD, around 26 MPG. Reliable car. Don't know the model though.

I got a 2000 mustang for $3600 but for cheaper things I gotta agree on the minivan. Cheap, reliable, and versatile.

It boils down to what you really want in a car but for the cheap I would go look at a BMW e30, like others have said, or a MK I or MK II VW Jetta

also old golfs are pretty legit in my book. Essentially for me you can't go wrong with old Euros....and some old Jap coupes and whatnot if you want that JDM reliability and whatnot.

you can always look for a used suburu legacy or outback..etc , good in snow, and good gas mileage. i myself never was a fan of suburu , even tho i canot deny they are good cars, my family does have a ll bean edition outback, just to small for me to drive comfortably. i just sold my 1999 dodge durango with 221000 miles and it runs like a clock, will c it around town for years. it was a great suv ( minus gas mileage, but there are tradeoffs ) like, tons of room, safetey, and its really nice to lay all the seats flat and have a dry and warm place to sleep if need be. that car had the 318 v8 wich is an amazing engine. i only did basic maitence on it and let me tell you when i sold it with 221000 , it drove like it had 100 000, so i found another 99 , this time a dodge dakota with a 5 spd manual tran, and the 5.2 318 v8. these are very very reliable vehicles if you arnt a dumbass and take care of them. in the 221000 miles i put on my durango, it never gave me one problem,,, at all. period. thats why when i found a low mile 99 318 v8 ( 90000 miles to be excact ) i picked it up on the spot, dakotas are great truck, if you get the v8 you basically get the same mileage as a v6 with way more power, especially with the 5 spd. and parts for 318 are very inexpensive due to the fact the engine has been in use for such a long time. its a compact truck, with full size truck capabilities, except you can actualy drive around town comfortably in tight spaces. just my two cents but , ya ive had great luck with these vehicles, and like i said my family owns a nice outback and two be honest it has had to have more work done on it then our american vehicles, just maintain your car. thats one good thing about your situation, if your looking for an older car on a low budget at least you have the peace of mind, that since the vehicle has been in service for a long time, parts are cheap, reviews are plentifull, and basic maintenence goes a long long way. just my two cents, good luck .

For 5 grand find a car with good gas mileage so you're not spending a ton on gas, since you're probably living on a college campus (?) you won't be doing much driving in the first place.

I got my 96 Outback for $1500, I just hit 200K miles on it a few weeks ago and it's still running strong. A few minor problems here and there but are easy fixes.

because the cars u posted are 30 plus years old. i dont care what brand u post if the car is 30 some years old it will be vastly more work to keep running than a car under 10 years old. you can easily find an mk4 in the price range he wants so why bother with an old as fuck rust bucket like an mk1/2?

I can agree with this. I owned one back in high school and I loved that thing. Nothing worked on it other than the engine by the time i hit 374k, but it was just a great do-all car.

you do have a valid point, but at the same time he asked for a car that would not embarrass him for under 5k. You can not be embarrassed in a MK I, they are classics and you can find plenty that are not rust buckets and in solid form if you know where to look......

I'm just a fan of classic cars like that. I'm actually looking for an E30 to autocross here in a few months. I know they won't be the most reliable vehicles on the road, but they would be something that you could slowly rebuild, turn into something that is your own, and be able to work on in your driveway unlike a lot of new vehicles that essentially mandate you take it to a dealer/ shop.

But I do agree with you, if you want something a bit more solid a newer MkIV jetta, golf, might be in your price range and still a fun little car. I just happened to be on stance nation earlier today and say a baller Datsun that made me think of old cars that still look awesome.

But like most others have said, find some run of the mill Honda, Toyota, etc. they will get you from point A to point B no problem and be a more sensible, albet slightly more boring IMO option. I'm just not very sensible when it comes to my car.

get an older ford ranger. My friend has one and its pretty good on gas with the 4 cylinder and pretty cool to have a pick up, you can put people or tons of shit in the back

I understand where you are coming from. I am a huge vw fan and the mk1/mk2 body styles are amazing and classic.

That being said they are very old and finding one in good condition is not easy. They are mostly owned by a younger generation that does not take the best care of their vehicles. Maintenance on almost all VW's is a bitch and once something goes bad with the electronics you're screwed.

The mk3 platform is no doubt a fun little car but the mk3's are notorious for having massive rust issues that are nearly impossible to fix due to the unibody design. My last car was an mk3 that i scrapped because the rust was so bad.

Honestly i simple car that is ver reliable and that is not embarrassing is going to be your run of the mill toyota or honda.

Just like you i am not a very sensible person when cars are involved.

Just get a Honda Accord or Civic. Some of the most reliable and consistent cars on the market. You'll blend in fine as long as its not riced out.

definitely a 95 or 96 subaru legacy (gotta be the 2.2 liter, not the 2.5).  i picked up mine with 160,000 miles for $1,500.  best car i've ever owned.  awesome in the snow, great gas mileage, reliable, plenty of room for gear, etc, etc, etc.  also, if you live someplace where it snows a lot it blends in just fine.

It doesn't really matter what kind of car, just look around for one that has been taken care of with little or no rust and no dents. Any car can look respectable as long as you put the time any money in on maintenance.

Best motor ever.

Mines got 195,000 and runs better than anyone elses car. Not to mention its got more features than any new car and has a v8-265 HP.

as far as good cheap cars, subarus, im a truck guy, 1st gen dodge cummins, a nice one is expensive, an ok one that isnt a pos is bout 5 grand, get a 4x4 with a 5 speed, they'll go a million miles gettin close to 20 mpg

my cummins with an auto, lifted on 35s with a few horsepower mods gets bout 18 mpg in the city, bout 21 on the high way
