Math in High School

So pointless, seriously, when am I going to need to find the equation of a parabola in standard form in my life? I look at the stuff we have to do this year and it's all so stupid. I don't know about you, but math up to grade 10 should be enough, math in 11 and 12 is basically just trying to put a big dent on your transcript.

Math brought down my average last year (grade 11) with 64% first term, 50% second term and 64% final (mark went up thanks to provincial exam).

Grade 12 is even worse, my teacher is BRUTAL, he gets us to do these massive homework assignments and then only marks the 3 hardest questions. Not to mention he 'surprised' us the day before our test letting us know that we can't use our graphing calculators, so I had to learn how to graph without them.

So far I have a 49% in that class, test tomorrow, wish me luck, math sucks.

I laughed at all my teachers in high school when they told me I would need to know this again. Needless to say I didnt pay attention and I barely passed. When are you gonna need to know how to find the equation of a parabola? College. Now im struggling in a math applications class because I never took the time to memorize all the formulas and it gets a lot harder.

besides parabolas have plenty of real applications in business and social sciences. Such as the cost of production can curve exponetially with the amount of product you are ordering/producing. The only thing you should pay attention to in high school is math if you plan on going to college someday.

i had AP calc in highschool, never did my homework, and somehow got the 3 i needed on the AP exam... no math in colllege for me thanks. and i found that payin attention in class didnt help me at all, i had to go through and read the book and do stuff on my own to understand calc, so maybe that would help steve?

yeah im a computer engineer and im in my 3rd year out of 5. i took eng 099, 101, 102, 103 each differnt quarter my first year and thats all the english i need for college, cant even take anymore classes cuz their are none. i had a few speech classes to completed.

and math i tested into really high so i had to take 1 basic math corse and then calc 1 & 2. and no more math forever.

so now im taking electronics classes and computer courses for the next 3 years.

see most people come to college to have fun and not take barely any classes, i NEVER have below 16 credit hours and im usually at 19 credit hours a quarter. i knew my major before i came to college thats why im getting done faster and i have a carrer already.

^yeah well you cant test into calc classes at UC, no calc is on the test. you can test past all the bullshit algebra and geometry but not past calc. UNLESS you took calc in HS.

and their is no such thing as calc III, its advanced technical calculus. calc III is non existant.

and yeah tech. calc is fucking insane

yea i did 9th and 10th grade math in middle school, and did 11th and 12th freshman and sophmore year. now i am taking problem solving, which is like going back 3 grades. its awsome. not that hard. i got like an 84 in my 12th grade level math class only because i always forgot to do the hw. and that was like the worst grade in math ive ever gotten

I love math and physics and science and all, but I want to be a writer so I'm getting all of my college level calculus and physics outa the way now. It's cool because math is fun and challenging and stuff. Just stop bitching about it being hard and learn how to do it...

i don't mind math or science, they're just not as easy as other courses are for me, so I actually have to study for tests. I doubt I'll need it after high school, but I need it to graduate so I may as well get good marks so it doesn't bring down my average.

yeah i hate math so much. this year its a lot easier because we get to sit in groups of three and work together on everything. i am gettin it now cuz i have help so yeah and we get to take group tests.last year math was the worst and i wanted to kill myself...but now its fun

Well, I used to think high school math was really hard. Last year I got 63%. Only then did I realize I'd only done once my homework. So on second term I said what the hell I'm studying a lot before the tests. I got 84 %. Third term I said what the hell this year is pretty important, I'm doing every homework and study hard. I got 90%.

This year, my last one, I realized the only thing blocking full comprehension was full attention. So I am the perfect student in math, I ask questions, do all my homework, study hard before tests. Up to now I have 98%. Try that (take it one step at a time).
