I'm looking into buying a new pair of skis and have it narrowed down to these two. I'm about 5'10" and 160. I ski mostly out east, but I go out west a couple times a year and need a ski that can handle that well too. Any other suggestions for what skis I should get would also be really helpful!
both those skis work well on the east coast and can hold their own in the west (assuming it's not a powder day)
i'd be a bit more likely to recommend the ar7 simply due to its ridiculously good all-mountain performance. Traditional camber will probably be best for those icy east coast days...
that being said i ski the alpha 1 currently and love the EST park rocker like nothing else in the park, even on huge jumps at mammoth
yeah that basically reaffirms my recommendation to go with the ar7... t-halls might also be worth looking into if you got the extra $50 to spend - the new core for 2012/13 is on point, and they are a bit more park-oriented with an identical footprint to the AR7 (then again, the 10th anniversary AR7 graphic is pretty hard to resist)
