Vesting winter jackets help?

I am strongly considering vesting one of the jackets I have.

There are vents under the armpits which is my main concern on how I could do this without just ruining the jacket.
So my question is does anyone know how to vest a coat with vents under the armpits (and its not a down jacket) correctly without ruining the coat?

I cut around em. Then, just tuck them into the body.

Probably you best option, when I tore open my pants I tried to sew 'em up but the seam just leaked and they kept on splitting around my stitch points. Took them to a Taylor got them done properly, seem sealed and all, since then they haven't leaked or torn.
