Those of you who didn't go to college

same here did the same path looking back fucked up major in high school wasn't originaly going to college did CC now at a pretty good school working for morgan stanley. Very easy to get caught up in the bullshit at a CC i didnt socialize or do anything there but easily can see how you would drop out after going there.

Joined the Air Force. Never looked back on it.

Our generation has no jobs /thread

The damage has already been dealt, and continues to be inflicted to the job market because the problems that are causing it are so far outside of the education system its maddening. The only people to blame for shitty employment levels and poor education system is the American fucking people, and any other citizens that are going through the same kind of socioeconomic issues right now. The worst part is that there is stupid oblivious pricks like Blondie that believe allowing people to do whatever they want will somehow trickle over for the rest of societies betterment. That's reagafuckingnomics, and it doesn't work. Period. The most unfortunate part is that, as always, there is no popular/viable/effective or foreseeable plan that has been offered by either presidential candidate because of how terribly the US democratic system operates (see: Grover Norquist).

Like, this entire problem is so complex and far reaching that you can't just talk about it on an internet forum. Go read the news, take a social science and learn about it.


I don't really have advice for people looking to go to college... If you have the opportunity and personal finances, meaning that you are confident in your abilities and are willing to accumulate debt, or your parents are willing to pay for it. I cannot stress enough the importance of  having a passion, a desire to learn, and can identify strongly with the true value of knowledge and education, and the nobility of it's pursuit. Not because you believe it is required, or that it is utilitarian in nature.

To put it as simply as possible, if you are going to college or university simply because you think you have to, don't go. You will be wasting your time, as well as other people's time and/or money. You should be able to learn a vocational skill in high school and become a skilled laborer/worker. Unfortunately, in order to get these jobs that should require nothing more than a high school degree there are people that have spent money (or in most cases acquired debt form predatory lenders) in order to achieve a piece of paper that qualifies them no more than a person without it. So in order to get a job, our generation is supposed to funnel through the completely morally and virtuously bankrupt economic systems that were put in place by the generations before us, and feed them while being completely oblivious to them because we have endless hordes of unmindful people like blondie who do not value or understand the importance of the preservation of common interest and civic virtue that would have prevented this entire mess in the first place. Fuck.

I do know for sure however, that it is going to become a lot harder than we already know, sooner than you think.

Its so fucking maddening.

There are tons of shaddy contractors out there. I do mainly commerical, built a ton of DHS buildings around ny and pa over the last year. Been working in the trades since i was 14 with a friends family company, I learned alot about how it works with them. People who do it right and charge a fair rate get tons more business than the cheap guys that do shaddy work. When i show up at a job site, its getting done right because i want that check to come in so i can take care of my guys and myself.

My dad dropped out of college to take care of my older sister and he has a sweet job now, he makes documentries and is in Kenya right now.

You don't NEED to go to college.

It must be a lot different in the Northern Hemisphere to Australia, because here you need a college degree or a trade to get a decent job whether it is full time or part time.

Everyone knows people who make millions without a college degree, but the world is a different place here. There are so many people on the job market that to even be considered for a 'decent job' you need to have a college degree. Then depending on which institution it is from, you have a higher chance of getting the job. That's just eh way it is and most people here accept that. It is even hard to get part time jobs with a lot of hours here without a college or tafe education. Sure, there are some people that will 'make it' without a college degree but they are in the minority.

This a thousand times over. I completely agree, if you have a passion and you are smart and resourceful you can absolutely make it through life swimmingly without going to college. That being said, not everyone is Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, or any of those other ubersuccessful businessmen. Many people who don't go to college have much lower paying and less satisfying jobs then people who do. Take a couple years before going, find your passion in life, find what will make you happy even if you have to work 70 hour weeks and pursue it.
