College/University is gonna be expensive anywhere in North America (exception to those living in Quebec) but having a degree is worth in the end. Theres no denying the stats that people with an education earn more.
Also sick and tired of everyone saying "I'm never gonna work in an office", "i'm gonna do what i enjoy for the rest of my life" because we all know that anybody earning less than 60k a year at whatever job it is that they "enjoy" so much isn't going to allow you to comfortably raise a family. Money doesn't equal happiness but It is a big part of it don't even try to argue.
95% of people are going to be putting in 8+ hours a day regardless of the job. Why not go to school and put in a little bit of time and effort with studies so while working those 8 or so hours, you're maximizing your income.
Everyone keeps referencing the (insert friend/family member) in their lives who dropped out of high school or college who owns a business and makes $xx,xxx, xxx a year, worked up from the bottom and is successful because they are a real go-getter. Here is the truth: for every one of them, there are 50,000 of their peers, probably more, who are busing tables, working in retail, cutting grass, unemployed, etc. just trying to make ends meet. I'm 24 and I've been out of college 3 years. Sure, I've got friends who have 4 year degrees that are still figuring things out (one of my good buddies is 27 and after teaching for a year and hating it is finishing up law school). The truth is, though, most of us who went to college have laid a foundation in fields we want to be in, are making good salaries, and are saving and planning for the future. Every time i go home, I'll see guys i went to high school with out at the bars who either didn't go to college, dropped out, or took time off and never really got back to it. Most of them work part time at restaurants or stores and are pretty much just hanging out (I realize this sounds cool to a lot of the NS crowd, keep in mind we're in our mid 20's and have had the last 6-8 years to party, its time to grow up). I get that college isn't for everyone. That's probably a maturity issue so get a job, join the army, whatever; just do something productive until you can handle working toward a long term goal. A lot of people who say college isn't for them are just lazy too. Ambition is great, but it isn't smart to buy the Bill Gates/ Mark Zuckerburg lotto ticket. An education and a degree makes everything easier and even if you don't go into that field, you'll gain a lot of perspective in earning that degree. I majored in international relations in college and I fly attack helicopters in the army right now. Everyday I apply 0% of what i learned in a college classroom to my job, but I wouldn't trade the education I got for anything. This is my perspective, good luck with whatever you all choose.
