alright so I think I'm gonna get some 185 ARV's but it just seems like they might be too long. I'm 5'11 and 160lbs. and I've always skied 177's. My main question is why does everybody say go long with a wide ski? It seems like a wider ski with more surface area you would go shorter. Whats the point of going longer? more stability going fast?

cuz the last thing u want is to get goin real fast and have the front ends sink cuz they're too short, esp when they're mounted closer to center like most twins are these days. plus, it's easier to stomp on longer skis because of more surface area, and they're more stable at speed

Because powder is different from groomed snow? And I'm looking for pow skis too, only long ones (188 and up). If anybody could help me out...

longer skis have more surface area touching the ground, which means your weight is more evenly distributed on that larger area. so basically if you were a 180 lbs dude, on a 177 cm length ski, the force per square inch could be hypothetically be 3 lbs per square inch. but with a 185, it could be 2 lbs per square inch. therefore, there will be less force on the snow per square inch with a longer ski, which allows you to float better in powder, which is the main goal of a powder ski. hope that answers your question

''Mount a Karhu ski up with alpine bindings and get a killer deal on the best, progressive skis on the market! -Same dimensions and flex, different topsheet''
i see quite a few people rockin alpine bindings on tele skis, it's no different than mounting traditional bindings on line skis that have the reactor screw holes

I keep hearing that the only advantage of a 189 cm Pistol(example)is you can reach higher speeds with comfort. With length your giving up agility. From experiance im going with a 179 pistol because its more agile and makes technical lines easyer to handle. Im the same height as you but not quite as fat.. jk with that ski the dimensions are the same with all sizes so im not giving up width for my smaller size.

man I can remeber when I was riding 204s as my everyday ski.
go long go short. the shorter you go the less speed you can gather, short is also easier to turn on the groomed.
I fin long boards can be used for any type of powder riding. going fast lots of control also. you can short turn em in the powder but you will get less face shots. pigs to turn on the groomed
P.S. JAPAN HAS SICK POWDER

As far as not being able to ski technical with a long ski, thats crap. You may not beable to ski super clean, but we are talking powder, no one is checking cords to see if your skis were parrellel... You can do it, it is just a bit more work.

why would you want to work harder for the same outcome?

Yea. It's good to go long, but not go too long. I'm gonna get 182's. Any longer and it's too much work to control.

if you are 5 foot 11, 185 should be totally fine. im 510 and im gonna be riding on 189 pow boards. if these skis are gonna be your all mtn cruisers along with pow skis, i would possibly say to go shorter. my pistols that i use all mtn are 179s. but pure pow sticks, you prolly wanna go longer, esp cause you're rpetty tall

yeah thats my problem, they would be my all mntn skis up at Mt. Hood. I'm pretty sure 175'2 are to short but 185's seem so long. Maybe i need something like a 182 BC???
