What kind of a gun do you own?

Looking into purchasing a gun and have narrowed it down to the Rugar 10/.22:

If you own one, post it up and share what you like/dislike about it, what kind of game you shoot, etc. Any further advice on cheaper alternatives or anything good for beginners as far as semi autos go would also be greatly appreciated.

This thread is clearly a discussion about people who own guns; not a debate about whether or not US citizens should own firearms. If you have nothing to contribute then don't bother posting because I don't want this to turn into an argument just like every other thread on NS.

no stupidly i didnt lub or clean it, figured it was an inexpensive 22 fuck it I'm just anxious to go shoot-big mistake i know i know-which is why it may have jamed.  Actually out of 150 rounds its jamed only once failed to eject at lease 5 times though. I was shooting with CCl mini-mags's pretty good ammo too

.22 rifles are super fun to mess around with you'll,love it if you just want something to mess around with. My advice though would be to get a 12 gauge and go skeet shooting it's souper douper fun. I have a Kimber .45 1911, a Sig Sauer 9mm, a beretta cx4 storm 9mill carbine, a franchi 12 gauge semi auto, and a beretta 12 gauge over under

I would use a .20 for skeet shooting. cheaper bullets and it is easier on your arm.

Jk. But I have shot my friends 10 gauge once when we were shooting clays and it's not as bad of a kick as some people would think. Almost no different than my 12.

I really think the .10 is dumb. for anything I hunt there is no need for the extra power since the pellets usually break up around the same spots.

They're nice for turkey or goose hunting. Turkey are tough fucking birds. I've seen them get hit from 20 yards and roll just to get right up and fly away like nothing happened. And geese like to fly a little higher so any extra firepower is helpful.

But ya, 10 gauge for duck, pheasant, grouse, or anything else is stupid really. You'll just fucking blow em to pieces.

yeah but the pattern spreads out at the same rate as a 12 gauge. it just has more punch.

I shot a turkey at 20 yards with a .20 and dropped it. it all depends on pellet placement and the more pellets you can get in the head neck region is better.

woo just bought another 1911! Taurus PT 1911 with some added options, 100 rounds through and pretty damn good grouping for the first time shooting it (all less than 3.5-4" with a couple exceptions at 10 yards). Really liking the feel of this gun even though I am used to more expensive 1911's.

20 gauge isn't that much cheaper. 12 gauge for me all the time, regardless of what kind of targets/loads I am using, they are just way more fun.

people with assault rifles, just a question; where besides the range do you fire it/think you might fire it? seems like an awful lot of money and hassle for something that's not really practical for civilians.

You realize people do hunt with "assault rifle" type weapons don't you? Home defense is another big reason people choose that platform. Either way, if someone enjoys spending the money on an AR and the ammo and range fees to shoot it, what's it to you? Why do you consider the AR to be "not really practical for civilians?"

Personally, not my style, but to each their own I guess.

well it just seems like for home defense, it would be really unwieldy, and have a big possibility of collateral damage. As for hunting, maybe it's just my uninformed opinion, but it seems like you really don't need an AR for that either, I mean how much lead do you need to pump into a buck before it's dead? I guess my point is, what use (beyond range like I said) for civilians is there for guns that are specifically designed for killing large amounts of people very quickly?

He just stated a few of his reasons. Personally I'd feel like such a loser hunting with an AR. You already have enough of an advantage, just go get yourself a nice bolt action rifle with a scope. I don't see the appeal of making your gun all extreme tactical and then shooting an animal. It's just a bunch of showboating and eye candy really.

^ To both of the posts above me. I totally agree with both of you.

Home defense with an AR is a bit overkill, as the 5.56/.223 round would definitely have a high risk of over-penetration in most situations at close range (most home defense situations.) Hunting with an AR is not really hunting in my mind, but people do, and they are laws that keep those types of firearms legal in some areas to use as hunting tools.

It's ridiculous that people spend that much money to put as many unnecessary accessories on a firearm they maybe use at the range once a week. However, I am not one to tell other people how to spend their money. I personally would never buy an AR, but I don't blame the people that do. Besides the fun aspect, there really isn't much appeal in an AR in my mind.

There is also the competition side of shooting that needs to be considered.

If your looking to own only one rifle that can do everything, the AR platform best suites those needs. Semi-Auto capabilities allow you to shoot competitively, use for home defense and varmint hunting (assuming smaller caliber). If you chose to get a larger caliber AR platform you have a rifle that can now hunt big game as well as the aforementioned benefits. The major plus side is customization, everyone wants a unique gun. Just look at all the different options you have with customizing your ski gear. Its just another passion.

I don't know why I giving this a bump but.. A few years back I bought a Kar-98 and Lee Enfield rifle at a yard sale. I also have a mossberg 12 guage pump and 22 long rifle. agreed with the self defense aspect.


I wouldnt use a tactical rifle for deer or any big game, but for predator hunting it is great. you have multiple shots at a coyote, which is good because they are usually running. and the reliability of todays AR's is great so even when the gun is dirty you are still going to have the same accuracy.



the best self defense weapon is by far a shot gun, specifically the judge pistol. that way you dont have to worry about your aim so much. just be prepared to rip your house apart.
