Personally I won't buy anything under 10000. But that's just me. I like to stay dry and when it's sometimes snowing at right around freezing you need that to stay dry.

siver is only 3000 holy shit that is really crappy. i didn't think it was much more expensive to have a waterproof jacket

3000mm waterproofing lasts you about 2 weeks on the hill. 10000, half a season or so, 20000 you get a full year before you lose waterproofing. gore tex is 43000

I dunno my helly jacket (its a kids jacket so i guess its not that good quality or whatever) says min 5000 after washing, so im just gonna assume that means 5,000. And i never got close to getting wet, except when I went puddle skimming, so Im thinking 5000 is fine.

It depends what they use to waterproof it. If it is sprayed with teflon or something, that will wear off in about a season and you will get wet more often, however if it is a tight fabric which is waterproof in itself, ie: goretex then it will last much longer.

sometimes when im running water to wash dishes or something, i think about how lucky i am to have such simple access to running water and how some people will never know such a simple pleasure.

then i let it run for awhile, just because i can.

if you loose your waterproofing just scotch guard up your jackets every 3-4 weeks! i like to scotch guard my shoes cause then i can be cool in the rain!

you can buy waterproofing shit, ive used it on old pants and coats before and it works really well for about a season or so.

why dont they make the outer layer of coats out of some sort of plastic material or rubber material. like a raincoat. thats where the water proffing is at boyyyyyeeeeessss

The thing is, the jacket doesnt really even matfter that much, as long as you have like 5000 then you are fine unless its raining hard Im thinking. Snowpants, however, you sit on the chairlift with and dont want it to soak through, as well as falling and stuff.

What DrPepper said is entirely wrong. The mm of the waterproofing has absolutely nothing to do with how long the waterproofing will last. It just depends on the quality of the garmet. Most companies use spray or or laminate or a combination of the two. Laminate, like Gore tex, lasts longer and usually work better. If you look at Burton stuff they say how many coats they put on of the spray on DWR. The more coats the longer it will last. I like coats that have both spray on and laminate because they are really waterprooof for about a year then not quite as waterproof after that but the DWR can easily be redone with Nikwax or somethin glike that.

^yes the mm does have everything to do with how long it lasts.

see in order to get a higher mm you have to add more to the jacket. hence a higher mm. how could you have a 200mm last for 2 years? its not possible because the reason its 200mm is because you barely applied any spray or laminate. you could easily double up on the spray and laminate and get 400mm, in turn lasting 2 times longer because their are 2 layers of the spray.

so how can you say it has nothing to do with how long the water proofing will last?

its simply physics man, get with the program.

the more spray you use the more it gets into the fabric, the longer its going to hold in the fabric, keeping the user dryer longer.

bam... yeah that was simple physics in my mind

Yeah but like veryone has their better coatings. Like Helly Hansen has helly tech and helly tech XP and Burton has their storm lite which has like 3 different levels of waterproofing.

10000 up is good, but just go for gore-tex

alot of people don't know what they're talking about....
here goes:

good jackets use truly waterproof/breathable fabric.
the theory on a waterproof/breathable fabric is that the pores of the fabric are too small for water molecules to penetrate, however large enough for vapor to exit (so you don't get all sweaty). on 3 layer laminates (which is what you should buy) the outer layer is waterproof. it will always be waterproof. it's won't 'wear out' (unless you put a hole in it) like the guy who mentioned helly hansen said... minimum 5,000mm.... you could ski in that jacket for 100 seasons and it would still be waterproof. the pores of the fabric simply won't allow water to pass. the thing that can wear out on these coats is the DWR which is spray on stuff that makes the water bead up... this is not to prevent water from getting in (water already can't get in). it's to make sure water can't sit on the fabric, clogging the pores which let your vapor out. when the pours are clogged, you get sweaty and clamy and feel wet. so they put on DWR. it wears out. but the waterproofness doesn't.

shitty coats use non-waterproof fabric, and coat the shit out of it with DWR so that it can have some kind of water proof rating. once the DWR wears off, your coat is no longer waterproof. these are the coats that have the weird mesh lining inside (which is there to transport moisture, because these non-laminates don't have a wicking layer). The cheaper oakley coats are like this, and i'm guessing Siver is too (correct me if i'm wrong please).

in conclusion, don't waste your money on fashion concious coats that don't work, but are expensive anyways.

Yeah like with what Coyote was saying. I've got a Burton AK jacket with 1 layer gore tex, The DWR has worn off and the jacket will look wet when skiing in wet snow or rain. But the water can't soak through the gore tex layer. So I don't actually get wet, I just look it.

For once, I'm with telestar. I wouldn't buy a jacket under 10,000. Both of mine are 30k (one 10kG, one 15kG). Breathability is a factor, too, though. if it's 20,000mm/4000g, it's probably just smothered in DWR, and the fabric isn't as high-quality. Bonfire's fabric on their top line jackets is excellent, and they don't cost much. Less than Sivers, anyways.
