Hey guys check out some of this footage my brother and I go from him racing a couple weekends ago. We used a GoPro HD Hero 2, we are trying to find more ways to isolate it better to keep the vibrations from the car shaking the camera to much.

that track sucks, thats part of your issue. you need to build something with soft rubber mounts.

Yeah, the track is pretty rough

but a pretty exciting race, haha I think it's hilarious that the guy you were chasing on the last lap ended up hitting the car that was already spun out, did he not see the yellow flags or something?

Just out of curiosity, what place did you end up getting in this race? and what series of racing is this?

First off we don't have rich parents, it is my brother racing, his car and all his money put into his car... The track is amazing technical and no track is perfectly smooth.

The series is a Waterford Hills Road Racing its apart of the SCCA. He placed second in class and forth overall. We are trying to get the car setup properly, went from Hoosier tires to Goodyears so still trying to figure out the best setup.

track isnt horrible, what most people need to realize in this thread is that to get a track with perfect pavement and a decent size takes millions of dollars, which your local road course isnt going to have. This combined with stiff suspension and a crap mount makes it look worse than it actually is


you want to see bad pavement try running at englishtown on their time attack course, that is straight up horrific

try running carts in parking lots, my ass still hurts

but about the mount you can get motorsports mounts, but if you want to get serious the contour cameras are much better espescially with sound for cars

everyones hating but this is fucking baller, i really want to try this shit sometime. What is this series of racing even called? it's like formula 1 but waaay smaller, is it indy?

We actually have a contour also. The contour wasn't working properly it kept cutting out, not holding a charge for the entire race. Also we have to use so much double sided tape to keep it isolated from the vibration on the car, which also make it cut out.

yea maybe i've just been playing too much Gran Turismo lately but i totally want to be a Le Mans driver now, can a 17 year old canadian even acheive that or do you have to start young? OP do you know?

He has put well of 20 grand into the car so far and that is cheap compared to our competitors... A lot of racers have a budget well over ours. And to get into le mans you need to practice a lot you can def attempt at getting into it because a lot of those drivers range from 16-45

Indy car racing sucks ass compared to F1, but I'm guessing he wouldn't becoming to NS to ask about a camera mount if he was in Indy

That’s me.  The car is a Reynard 90SF, built to the SCCA Formula Continental rule set.  This race was run at Waterford Hills, which is a little 1.4 mile road course about an hour north of Detroit.   I purchased this car last fall and have run it four weekends now.  I’ve been running SCCA now for three seasons.  All of this is done out of my own pocket, but I’ve also got a full time gig and am out of school.  I’ve got less than 20k in the car, but I beg borrow and steal my way to race.  Also, I’ve given up some things to make it happen.  I don’t go out drinking much on the weekends and try to avoid eating out too often.  It takes a lot of dedication to prep the car for each event.

I’ve been using both a Contour and a GoPro.  Both are new and I’ve been struggling with keeping the Contour operating (it replaced a ContourHD that took a shit earlier in the spring).  I got sick of losing all the footage so I made a quick swap to mount the GoPro facing forward.  The car creates a lot of vibration and I didn’t have time to really work on the mount so there is significant movement of the camera.  The track is bumpy and you can hear the camera bounce off the roll hoop a few times, but the vibration from the engine is by far the biggest culprit.  I used to shoot all the forward footie from my old Contour and the results were pretty good.  More race footage here: http://contour.com/users/2bwise

I got started back in college with Formula SAE.  Resources were pretty much free back then, but I also autocrossed my street car all summer.  The more seat time the better.  Once I graduated I got my SCCA license and began road racing.  The first two seasons I ran a Formula Vee, then a Formula First, and now the FC.  May never be going pro as a race driver, but I do get to test drive vehicles every day at work.  Its not racing, but I guarantee I spend more time driving cars than 90% of the pro drivers out there.
