First metal concert

So I'm going to my first metal concert on august 1st (Dethklok, Lamb of God and Gojira) and I'm crazy excited!

Post up you're favorite metal bands to see live and any cool stories about seeing them.

My favorite metal bands (80s pop metal),

Dokken, Ratt, Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Yngwie Malmsteen, Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper, Dio, Winger, and all that shit.

I don't have any crazy concert stories from metal shows i have been to, but shits fun as hell, and i have seen some hard core metal bands play and everyone goes fucking nuts.

Yeah, that is not metal.


Protest the Hero always puts on a super fun show. Between the Buried and Me is just amazing to watch/listen to. The atmosphere they create is ridiculous - I don't even feel like moshing when I go. The same goes for the Contortionist. I've seen a lot of others too: Periphery, Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica, TesseracT, Animals as Leaders, The Human Abstract, and many, many more. Oh, and even if its in the OP I somehow forgot to add LoG and Gojira. Amazing shows as well. Such energy.

One concert that I must see in my lifetime is The Dillinger Escape Plan. They look absolutely insane live.

bring bud. get in mosh pits. don't wear clothes you care about (or shoes). you'll never know when you'll get in a mosh pit. be prepared to see titties of solid 7's

Yeah it is, it was the original metal music, people like black sabbath and led zeppelin inspiring them, and it paved the way for all this death-core hard core something core bullshit that people consider metal today.

still, it reminds me of when I tell people I'm a skier and they picture gapers,racers, and aerialists.

"oh you listen to metal? word i like ACDC too!" by today's standards I wouldn't consider those bands metal, even though yes they technically are.

ANYWAYS, for op, lamb of god is sick as fuck live, I've seen them twice and they killed it. I have one of campbell's picks and my friend got a drumstick. dethklok should be interesting though lol.

also protect ya neck when you're in the pit, it tends to sway without warning. people will pick you up if you fall though. I once got tripped and tore some back ligaments. watch out of emo queers throwing their fists around like wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube men.

but (assuming you're a freeskier) how do you like it when people assume you dress like glenn plake and do spread eagles and 360 whirley birds?

I'm not saying liking old metal, or old skiing are bad, but it doesn't represent the same thing.

Dio and Ozzy are metal. The others are not. Black Sabbath started metal, there is no denying it. Pretty much everything else you listed is either Hard Rock or some Glam Hair metal (which is not truly metal). And hair metal died off - it never contributed to anything. Sorry for my hatred of those bands, but I just can't stand them. I listen to almost any type of music (Jazz, all types of classical, Bluegrass, Folk, almost all metal imaginable, etc.), but i cannot get around to liking shit like Def Leppard and Motley Crue. It is as bad as pop music.

And Schubert paved the way for many artists after him, and even has inspired some metal of today. Is Schubert metal now? No.

Different tastes man, but those bands are mostly not metal. Sabbath, on the other hand, will be metal by any standards.

You know what? Fuck genres.

ask any 45 year old man what their favorite metal band is and they will say bands that amadeus named.

but some good metal bands i've seen are: whitechapel, as i lay dying, evergreen terrace, august burns red, haste the day, devil wears prada(not really a fan, but a decent show), misery signals.

really tempted to go see slipknot and motorhead in a month. dunno if i wanna pay the money for it. since i'm not the biggest fan of em. might possibly get in for free tho.

Just keep an out for the emo kids "scene dancing" or whatever the hell it's called. When I saw Meshuggah some kid in the pit definitely started windmilling their arms around out of nowhere... my face didn't appreciate that one.

First heavy metal show lineup was, Suicidal Tendencies / Danzig / Metallica. It was a killer show. Also, if you have a chance to see Hell's Belles they are incredible live. do ittttttt.

Well schubert is a strange example to use, but you could say that people like Bach, Handel, Marcello, and others established western harmony as we know it today which would in turn contributed to metal music. Not to mention a lot of metal music (neoclassical) is just baroque melodies and sequences on electric guitar.

There is definitely still genres of music and that its not just one big flowing river of creativity, I'm just saying that people who are in a lot of metal bands today grew up and inspired by a lot of glam metal and classic metal bands like iron maiden, motley crue (who i don't like), led zeplin and others. Musically almost all metal and rock music is pop music. They consist of the same chord progressions and harmonic rhythms as artists miley cyrus, and lady gaga. Metal for me is more about the attitude and production value.

Going back to the schubert example, you could say that his song cycles are like pop songs. They are structured very similarly to that of pop songs. I mean mozart uses I IV V progressions all the time and so do pop musicians. So there is a connection between all music but there are obviously different genres of music which could be separated by something as slight as whether or not the artist uses distorted guitars and keyboards or acoustic guitars and percussion. It is safe to say however that without people like Bach, or the invention of well-temperment there wouldn't be metal music.

A lot of people say that LZ started metal, but I don't really believe that. Though (if my info is correct), they were the first to be called metal, the term "metal" did not mean the same thing back then. It is with black sabbath that the word "metal" actual turned into real metal. If that makes any sense. Some may disagree with me, but that is my opinion.

ah. Ok, you seem to know a decent bit about music. Sweet. Listen to "Death and the Maiden" by Schubert. If you turn some of those parts into riffs it just screams Opeth (by the way, go listen to them).

Now, though popular metal uses the standard progressions often, I don't feel that those songs have much depth. I like listening to it, but I find more depth in the prog-ier side of it. Odd meter, tempo/dynamic changes, blending of other genres, contrast between brutally heavy and ambient. Here you will not find so many of the standard progressions and song structures.

As with anything, however, I guess there are so many sides to every type of music it is ridiculous to compare and this just proves it.

The Who was only labeled heavy because they were notorious for having ridiculously loud concerts. Power pop is a much more accurate term to describe them.

Wasn't expecting this to turn into a 'who started metal thread', but IMO black sabbath got the ball rolling.  They were the first to use the diminished fifth (the devil's music) and came a little before led zeppelin.  Also, Alice Copper was the first to be called heavy metal by Rolling Stone in 1972.

I'm not saying Sabbath was definetly the first, but in my opinion they were the first to have that detuned, overdriven minor chord progression guitar sound.

I've never been to a concert but my advise would to not bring a lot of money, dress for the weather, try not to stick out. That is important. If you dress like some ignant hoodrat 4xl jiberish skier thug, your bound to have someone start something with you. Have fun dog

clearly. no one will just start shit with you because you're wearing a goofy dress. people wear the dumbest looking shit to metal concerts. it's not uncommon to see people with huge liberty spikes, makeup, weird kinky outfits and have obscene amounts of piercings and tats.
