whats your favorite recipes/foods to bring on long backpacking trips? (minus dehydrated meals)

my new discovery is the bean burito

ingredients
1. tortillas
2. bean dip (comes in packts or small lightweight cardboard containers)
3. spam singles
4. string cheese
5. redhot

just thrown one of everything into the tortilla and go to town.

Tortillas are fantastic for backpacking since they're so energy dense, but I try to stay away from carrying a bunch of ingredients to cook something with. A standard food item for me is peanut butter and banana slices wrapped in a tortilla. Even though it may not sound great right now as you sit in a chair in front of your computer, it tastes fantastic on the trail and it has a ludicrous amount of energy in it.

ahh this is a great idea, I honestly eat lamest stuff on the trail so I'd be interested in some new ideas

The best meal I have ever had was a trail turkey dinner. We had canned turkey, powdered potatoes and gravy along with dehydrated stuffing. It was easy to pack and was fairly light, great to have for a last night meal.

Boboli pizzas. The pre-made 8 inch crusts will fit just about anywhere, and they're super easy to cook if you have a decent stove.

I have two really nice cook books for camping that I would reccomend. Camp Cooking The Black Feather Guide Cooking Wild in Kate's Camp (more Dutch oven centered) Both have some great recipes.

What type of toppings do they have? Would they keep very long? I wonder if you could pack some small 6 inch pizzas for a first night dinner. I might try that.

they only come with tomato sauce, but i would assume that they would last at least a few weeks on the trail

everything tastes so fucking good on the trail. My favorite meal was thanksgiving dinner in july. Instant mashed potatoes, instant gravy, canned turkey...fuck it was so good.

Pizza tortillas- best lunch ever.
Pepperoni, cheese, tomato sauce (can store in a small bottle or dehydrate for longer trips) on a tortilla.

ahhhhhh you just made me nostalgia all over my keyboard. it's been so long since I've had an MRE. I'm makin a break for the army surplus store this weekend now. Don't throw the tobasco bottle in the campfire.

I'm a big fan of wrapping any vegetable in foil and throwing it in the fire, or mixing a few veges cut up in a foil ball and throwing that in the fire.

NRS makes dry bags for kayaking that come with a cooler insert, you can freeze a steak or sausage and it will at least make it through a whole day of hiking for a fantastic first nights meal without lugging a full size cooler. Blow it up and close it when it's empty and you've got a nice air pillow haha.

Me and my dad always bring jambalaya mix. Add water and throw in some summer sausage. Its super lightweight and it extremely tasty.

Summer Sausage, Cheese, and crackers. Easiest meal ever for backpacking, Or if you are on a one nighter hobo packs are amazing.

crack a dozen (relatively fresh) eggs into a nalgene bottle before you leave, then just scramble them for breakfast the next morning. oatmeal packets are also a great trail breakfast obviously but can get boring after a while. eggs should keep for 1-2 days depending on how warm it is out. if its cool out (ie not summer) they should keep longer. rotten eggs are easy to smell and avoid anyhow.

premixing and storing in a nalgene is really handy, works well with pancake batter too. actually i just thought of this but making beer batter to use on fish would be wicked if you were planning on catching/preparing some (more of a canoe trip thing i guess)
