NS and team sports

Well, I am really an independent, action/extreme sports kind of fellow and I was wondering how most NS'rs are.

I have obviously played my share of team sports in high school and stuff but I could never really get in the groove of how it seemed everyone took everything so fucking seriously. I used to play soccer, and every single fucking game we didn't win by 5 points half my team would cry. I just don't like the holier than thou vibe that they give off, and frankly I don't like anything about them.

Super boring.

^I should add, I played baseball, basketball and soccer for years until it became too competitive and bitter for my liking. Then I moved toward swim team and track. Both of which allowed me to further my own goals. I never needed to think of myself as having to get the fastest time or the longest jump. I thought of it more as a week-to-week challenge to push myself to do better, to PR.

I think a lot of that came from skiing. As I realized early on that I didn't like team sports, I thought about why this was the case. And it did come back to skiing. Individual sports for me are precisely the same as weekend skiing. In skiing, I push myself to get that trick or ride that line or huck that cliff just as I push myself for a better time on the track or in the swimming pool. There's more of a linear progression. That's what does it for me I guess.

holy fuck kid, can't you just accept that people aren't the same as you? And read the damn OP. I've had bad teams my whole life. Am I biased a bit? Maybe, but no one's gonna like something that they've continually had a bad time with. And you know what? I was good, at all the sports I played. I just didn't have the same drive I have for the sports I really love! maybe I'm whining but when consistently have your team cries at everythingg (NOT JUST ONE SEASON, mind you) then maybe even you'd see that I'm not a the whiny bitch.

nah you werent good. people love the sports that they kickass at.

Do what feels good and is fun for you, but dont go generalizing people and their activities based on your very limited experience. just cause you are not super competitive, doenst mean that that is a negative trait to have.

team sports are awesome, i miss organized basketball. pickup doesnt have that same level of competition

That competition you seek also exists in team sports. In order to acheivd the ultimate goal of scoring more points each individual has to have the drive and passion to get better and improve and beat the guy across from them. Some people just don't find that drive in team sports. To me football is the perfect game because of the involvement of each individual working as hard as possible to achieve the ultimate goal as a team, but yes team sports can suck when players on the team don't have that attitude and when you are putting out 110% when everyone else or evens few others are not it can become really frustrating. This thread is dumb because everybody is different and it is just a shitshow of people trying to make others feel the same way as them.

If you don't like team sports it is stupid to say they suck and your sport J's better, maybe that is true for you but that is a stupid generalization. Also if you like team sports it is stupid to say people who don't are gay or stupid or whiny.

I hate team sports now, but used to play a ton. Played hockey for 5 years, soccer for like 8, baseball for 2. Now I just stick to action sports and stuff, only team sport I still play is soccer. Would play football if I had the time.

You are hitting it right on the nail.

Another thing the people say why they like skiing more than team sports is because there is not someone telling them what drills they need to do, how there performance could be better, or what they have to do. So the people that say they like skiing better than team sports is because they don't like someone telling them what they have to do/ yelling at them. But this is not a good reason to say team are sports are dumb, you just have different views.

Relating to your 110% point, it is so true especially in high school sports. Most of the time you have people that do the sport because they enjoy it and you have people that do the sport because their friends do it and/or they want the credit. Those people really get on my nerves; it drives me crazy. My sport of choice is rowing and I plan to continue it next year in college. At my high school we have a very small program and numbers are limited, so you may be put in a boat with people that do not put in the same amount of effort as you, and/or are not serious about the sport. At the beginning of the season, it is not to bad but as the season progresses into focusing on trying to do well in races. When some people in your boat do not take things seriously it makes me so angry; I can't even describe it but people who play team sports should understand how I feel. But our team is small like i said and you cannot do anything about it. All you can do is make sure you are giving 110% on everything that you do; your coach will notice, and it is good for your coach to notice that, he will trust you.

Teams sports are the bomb especially when everyone giving all they got because when you actually win something it is a feeling like no other. If you are not a fan of team sports don't say how dumb they are.

Look dude, I'm just relating my personal experience. I've had a tough time. I wouldn't just straight out dis something, unless I had a genuine bad experience. Sadly, I did. I'm pretty quiet in real life, so when I get into this team sports setting that I tried, people, I really don't know why, weren't nice to me at the start and it just got progressively worse.

Sorry if you take that the wrong way. Sorry for making this thread that happened to make everything go awry, i already made a lot of enemies on this site (ha ha)

so different strokes for different folks I guess

Ok first off, on a team that is pretty competitive in a good division, club soccer, club basketball etc not high school sports (excluding some high schools). the only goal is to win. not to go goof around with yer buds. thats what pickup games are for.

on a team where the mentality is win, the players like you who are not putting fourth full effort are looked down upon.

secondly if you actually played soccer at a high level you wouldnt call goals "points".

I call them what I want. That's what everyone called them on my high school team. Goals, points. potato potahto.

And honest to god people, you keep saying "you obviously suck/don't try/don't care/" quite the contrary. I played. I played really well, and everyone knows it. I have my own opinions. I don't just yell them at my team.

So, obviously i'm the bad guy because I have done something many years and ended up not liking it. I first played soccer when I was like 4. I've played for years. Give me a break!

Same here, man

I just quit lacrosse this past season. I mean its a great sport, but it was being taken way too seriously. We had just won two state championships (I didn't play in them, i was on JV) and everyone wanted a three peat, which is normal. But it wasn't fun anymore. It was all about winning, and the overall vibe was "If you don't want to play, quit." It sucks, but that's how it is

I've skied some deep powder, landed dozens of new tricks, stomped lines I am am pretty proud of, I have had some amazing times skiing. None of those things will ever compare to the feeling I had winning a 5a state championship my senior year of high school.

I'll tell you why I love skiing more than team sports:

I know for a fact my opponent will always be better than me. You will never go "undefeated" on the mountain. Sure you might have great day skiing, with no bails and all stomps, but there will always be a more difficult trick, a steeper line, a bigger cliff. And that is why skiing is so much more thrilling and challenging to me.

I played soccer, baseball, and hockey all the way through highschool and found it to be incredibly fun. I was even cut from the varsity team from my school and still love soccer...

Some people are born to play team sports and some are not, I'm assuming you are the latter.

People who keep saying skiing is a competitive sport when youre skiing with yer buds hitting 15 footers.

if you dont actually compete in events skiing is a hobby/activity/exercise. not a competitive sport.

Seriously though you guys sound like a bunch of babies. Either you sucked, and hated that everyone was better than you, or you were kind shit and hated that everyone sucked. Either way, I still stand by my statement that you guys are going to suck dick at working with other people... The beauty of a team sport is that you have to overcome that challenge, and understand that you're not the only one out there, and that you DO have to depend on others, and they DO have to depend on you. Teaches you to be a teamplayer, which is important in the workforce. Kids who can't cooperate with others are the worst.

Well for the most part if you are good at something you get a sense of reward and feel good about it. So you like it. Soo if you don't like it it is pretty likely you aren't any good at it. But hey maybe you're an awesome ball player and you just aren't into team atmospheres. Idk. Refer to my above post for my comprehensive opinion on this subject.

I used to play basketball and baseball up through eighth grade, then I decided I wanted to ski more and I knew I was pretty good so freshmen year I joined the ski team. This has been great because you get the individuality and team atmosphere at the same time. Spring of freshmen year, I played on the volleyball team, which sucked, largely because of the laxadasical players and bad coaches. This year, I threw Javelin which was much more fun because it was good being with friends and seeing yourself improve even though I wasn't that good.

you're right, it was the team atmosphere. i'm more of an introvert when it comes to that stuff! I had my fun playing soccer and stuff like that... but indie sports are the best for me

I understand where you are coming from, i really do.

i am one of those people that has an on, and an off switch, but no medium. I am either super duper, will puke trying to beat you in raquetball, competitive or i am super laid back just tryna have as much fun as possible.

since i stopped playing competitive sports i dont have that outlet for being aggressivly competitive. Enter, charging gnarly lines. Skiing and biking at the edge of my ability brings out the most competitive Me, becuase that is when i am most focused/intense/ and athletic.

BUT, I have never been satisfied as a loser, when my goal was to win. I hate losing more than i like winning; and i love winning more than pretty much anything i can think of. Knowing that somemone got the better of you(as long as they arent leagues better than you), just makes me super agitated, and mad.

And that is why I was, and still identify myself as a ball sport guy.

i run xc and track, and i love it.my team is a bunch of chill guys and we are really tight, so its great.
definetly beats the general pissy-ness some of my soccer teamates would get.

this is hard to explain but....the thing i love about skiing is how much of a difference there is between like beginners and pros like wallisch etc. i mean i know in baseball people hit farther and throw harder but its virtually the same thing while in skiing and any action sport your risking your life once you get to a certain level

I enjoy both team sports and individual spots, however when push comes to shove I usually chose to compete at in individual sports. Throughout school I played/ competed in Waterpolo, Field hockey, softball, surf lifesaving, cricket, swimming, netball, soccer, Cross country, Rowing, diving, swimming, skiing and a few others. And I enjoyed them all, however my favourites were the ones that I played at a competitive level (Club-National) Waterpolo, Field Hockey, Swimming, Surf Lifesaving and rowing as we all had the some objectives and put in 100% to achieve our goals. It's at that point where I begin to enjoy it. Although all in all when I was forced to decide what I wanted to become professional in I chose skiing an individual sport because it is guaranteed that if I win or fail it is because I did or didn't put the effort in not the team, plus the culture is more inviting.

action sports are so much more rewarding! "sick! you won by 3 goals in soccer!" or "sick! you just stomped that massive cliff!" what would you rather do?? and you also meet some many more chill people with good vibes going instead of those hot headed fucks.

Thats why you get all of your friends to play volleyball. Nobody cares if you're good or if you win or lose. Practice is a joke and incredibly fun, and volleyball is actually a surprisingly fun sport.
