Best ski to get with JJ/Magic J

I'm getting JJ's or Magic J's this year but as its going im probably getting two pairs.  I just wanted to know what you guys think would be a good ski to go with them.  I was thinking maybe Bubbas or some Hellbents, or would it be better to go on the smaller side (since JJ's float fine) but I dont really know what size range I should be looking at. I ski in the PNW and I'm not super into park, and im around 6ft 180.  Thanks for the advice!

185 JJ or 195 JJ the ski will do everything very well. great ski even if you aren't doing any dope mad ill tricks

Go smaller. Both those skis are built to float. I recommend looking at the ARV if you're trying to stay within the Armada lineup.

you should get a big pow ski (like hellbents) and a ski around 100 underfoot because you dont do much park

jj is a bit more agile than the magic j, but the magic j can charge harder and makes a bigger turn. your size, 190 magic j should be no problem. if you are also thinkin about a bubba, it skis like the old arg in that is prefers turns and slower skiing to fast skiing. also, you would find a lot of overlap with the jj/ mj in terms of days u wanted to use the bubba. if u want a second ski look at a pettitor or a bacon or something a little more hard snow friendly, in case it isnt as deep.

check out the 184 bacons if your looking for a little more versatile ski that will still float in pow. underfoot is only 108mm so above post is right that it will bite better on harder snow.

Why would you need two pow skis? Bubbas will be the best bottomless pow ski IMHO but I'd go with an all mountain ski like the arv or 2012

hellbents are so much fun, i found that mine chatter alot and arent super stable when your not in pow, so if ur looking for an all-mountain ski the hellbents might not be an #1 choice, just my opinion tho

I've found that if I really get on top of my hellbents and show them who's boss that I can stil charge trough the chatter. I'm a bigger guy and I'm using the clown bents

Yeah mostly because ive demo'd the Bubbas and had the time of my life (sang that in my head)... they are amazing.  Thats why i was thinking maybe the Magic J and something smaller too, I didnt want to have alot of overlap between the JJ and the SFB (but Im also not sure if there would be sense ive never ridden th bacons)

I've got to try this this season. I spend too much time on Hellbents just surfing around and as soon as they start bucking hard I get all scared and move in with my aunty and uncle in Bel Air....

But really, I must try just sacking up and charging on them. I do wonder if I screwed them up by going center sometimes, but I'm sure if I just give it heaps they'll work.

to start things off i am 6'3" 215 and an incredibly aggressive skier

i found my hellbents as a demo ski at my local shop and they were so cheap i couldn't pass them up....after a few weeks on the skis being mounted back, I was honestly viewing these skis as a disposable set of planks that i would probably be selling at the end of the year. Those large cartoon tips were taking supreme advantage of me when there was even a small bump.

i then moved the bindings to center mount and these skis probably wont leave my quiver until they break.

If you have the leg strength and stamina you can get on top of these clowns and really take control of the situation, but if you are packing around a set of chicken legs things will be difficult for you as these skis are BIG AND CONTROLLING.

what size bents are you using?^^^^

Would there be too much overlap with the jj and sfb? Or are they different enough to use them both?

they are quite different but they they have similar dementions. no reason to have both

sfb is 108 under foot. jj is 115. they are sort of close. the bacon skis more like a big park ski (very freestyle oriented), whereas the jj is a more all mountain feel. in some ways i would even say maybe get something narrower than an sfb if u want a jj/bubba/magic j. a line blend or a k2 kung fujas might be other options to look at.

Getting so off-topic but super relevant to my interests...

I'm about 5'10, 190... and I'd say I have the leg strength, I used to race DH mountainbikes and in the summer I play catcher in softball. I'm on 179 'bents as I like to be pretty playful on them. This year I'm going to get on top of the bastards and just try to charge on them, you've inspired me a bit there.

Mmm... only thing is I generally ski them all day every day, including a fair amount of park. And whilst hucking around some 89 bents would be awesome, I suspect they wouldn't be quite as fun.

hellbents are heavy as fuck but even on the 189s there is still only like 100cm of the ski that touches right? so its like skiing snow blades most the time

Snow blades with weights on each end, yeah... while the effective edge when running flat or engaging a turn is pretty short the weight is still there. And with the 89's it's that much further from the middle of the ski, so when you're spinning there's a lot of rotational inertia you have to overcome (physics derp derp).

Although it's only really 5cm at each end, maybe I should sack up and get some 89s one day...

yea for sure i tried some 175 jj's the first time i was on a pow ski and i felt like i was on like 135's but imho i would never buy a hellbent unless your only using it for heli skiing haha

Why? The only time they have an advantage over other pow skis is in bottomless pow. I think I would still rather use my jj's in bottomless pow than the hellbents

honestly...there are days that i want to bring out the tanks and leave my jjs at home...you said the only time you should use them is for heliskiing...disagree

Well I was just saying they don't have an advantage over any other pow ski in almost all conditions... I can't think of when I'd rather ride hellbents over my jj's or bent chetlers

I notice a pretty big difference in float from a Bubba to a JJ, but I flux between 180-200 So id imagine JJ's float you pretty well in any depth of Pow.  So i'd imagine the Hellbents would be about the same

The design on the bubba lets them float better and ski hardback/ groomers Better than the hellbents
