after the success of last seasons thread and the new season only a short wait away after the euros i think it could be time to kick this off

di matteo is set to be confirmed as the new chelsea manager, will he work miracles again?

who's your team and how well do you think they'll do this year?


i'm a sunderland fan and i think we will be top 10 and maybe just sneak into the europa league

Personally not a fan of Mata. I believe he's left footed. RW that can cut in and use his left foot for the shot. Sounds good to me.

neymar will most likely never end up in england. Or for that matter, anywhere but Spain.

He's being groomed for spain, and seemingly every past player is telling him to go there.

And as much as i hate to say it, absolutely no teams can match real madrid or barcelona in terms of global fame and reputation. Especially not chelsea or man city, and even Arsenal, liverpool and manchester united can't match up to them. The only one that comes close is inexplicably juventus. For some reason damn near everyone knows about juve.

If he really wants to be the star, he'll end up at barcelona, and be the new young sensation alongside messi, who will by that point have confirmed his domination. And a single team running a strike force of messi and neymar is absolutely horrific.

Mata was arguably our best player over the course of last season. Right now he's just burnt out, he played almost every game + Euros + Olympics.

^I agree Neymar wouldn't fit into the PL unless he changed his game up. He holds onto the ball too long and would get properly smacked around for it. I'm anxious for him to make the jump though, I'm still not sold on all the hype.

he'd have to do like messi. He's learned to change his game when he plays english sides in the CL. He becomes a bit more direct with his pace rather than tricks, and uses his size to kind of slip into tighter spots.

They're both short and not that big though. In england it seems like the best strikers are either tall and somewhat lanky (van persie like, not crouch.) Or shorter and stalky...like rooney.

I've always thought benzema would probably dominate the epl. He's tall, but he's a big guy overall. A bit like drogba.

I could see Neymar going to Spain but, I definitely do not see him at Barca. Didn't Barca try to pair amazing players next to Messi and it not working out? I'm not 100% sure but I had heard that this was the case back when Eto'o was on the team. So maybe Neymar and Messi may not work very well. Don't know the whole story on things though.

I disagree. I think Neymar could end up in a number of places, maybe France with PSG. Lots of wealthy teams could afford to pay him silly money, but he will want to be the star player, which Barca and Madrid can't guarantee.

The premier leagues style of play is changing to suit smaller players and I expect to see it continuing to change with government initiatives such as the idea for kids to play on smaller pitches and focus on passing/movement rather than raw, physical, route 1 football.

And as for global fame, Man Utd make most other sports teams look silly, the brand image outside of Europe, especially in Asia, is huge. Chelsea are investing in global image too with F1 adverts on the Sauber Car. Of course Barca and Real are considered 2 of the top 5 European sides but in terms of global fame I would put them behind Utd.

Juventus? They have had a really good season last year, but comparing their fame and reputation to any of the other teams mentioned? Match fixing... a decent, albeit ageing team and no marquee player signing this season, oh and no Del Piero.

The Italian league, which I'd place behind the Spanish and English leagues in term of quality of players could be the best opportunity for Neymar.... He would most likely become the Serie A poster boy ahead of the other 2 stronger leagues.

I completely agree about the global fame thing. Like I posted earlier in the thread. I just started paying attention to Football a month or two before this seasons BPL started. Became a fan of Chelsea because of their involvement with the Sauber F1 team so, that tactic is most definitely working for them.

As far as teams that I didn't know before paying attention to Football? I payed absolutely no attention at all. Thought it was a pussy sport and supported American Football more and I hate American Football. This being said, the teams that I had definitely heard of will be posted below.

1. Man U.
2. Arsenal
3. Chelsea

Other than those 3, had absolutely no idea team wise. I of course knew the big players like Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Messi and Rooney. But, as far as Spanish Football teams, didn't know anything about them. So, just my thoughts as I was somebody who knew next to nothing about Football a month or two ago. Gives you a good insight on a teams "Global Fame."

As far as what Series Neymar would go to? I agree with the poster boy comment but, Serie A may not be so good as well. Think of all the players that are their. One big one that comes to mind is the monster that is Zlatan Ibrahimovich. The guy is still much better than Neymar if you ask me. I think the French league has the least known players at the moment. Liga BBVA, BPL, Serie A and Bundesliga are a bit too big at the moment for him to be a poster boy.

Sort of a random fact, but I read somewhere that Neymar weighs less than Messi. I agree that he will never be in the premier league, but I really do think Spain is where he will go. He seems to cocky to go anywhere, but the best. Also, I'd love to see Benzema or Higuain(sp?) get transfered to the EPL so they could both secure a starting role

You hear about them because we speak english and they do too. I did under rate united, I'll admit. But really, you travel anywhere in the world and there are people who will know about barca or madrid.

Being bi lingual most people know Man U before they know Barca or Real Madrid here in Japan. (Even before Kagawa went there) Maybe across Europe the Spanish teams are bigger.

Maybe I overestimated. It just seems like based on my own travels and experiences, everyone knows their local team...then either of the spanish giants. Hell if you look at pictures of kids in iraq or some village in afghanistan and it seems like theres always a kid in a messi jersey somehow

People that know about football will know teams and the great players on it. People that don't know about football very much will know a major team or two that gets shown on the news a lot. Generally speaking the BPL is most likely the most shown around the world. And the people that don't know anything about Football will know the major players but not know anything else about them.

For instance. Before I was into Football. I knew who Messi and Ronaldo were but, had no idea what teams they played for. I figured they were in the BPL because it is the thing that seems to get shown a lot.

Sorry for the double post but, I just checked up on the Fantasy League we have going. I'm sitting in second but the top 5 are very close.

What are people predictions for the two big games this weekend? I think Arsenal will pull a victory over Man City. Man U will beat Liverpool though.

Also find this little feud between brad friedel and fabien barthez to be hilarious.

I think Brad needs to realize that despite his many hilarious errors, he's dealing with a keeper who is regularly regarded as being one of the best. You don't stumble your way into winning a world cup, a euro, and 4 different league titles by being a bad keeper. And he happens to be tied for record number of world cup clean sheets, and is a lev yashin winner.

But that's ok, I'm sure friedel has plenty of personal accolades and trophies to back his claims up....oh wait.


What's funny is i hate tottenham, and i like seeing old man friedel play because he's worse than hugo, and it makes sure hugo isn't injured for france, and yet i still think he's an idiot.

I think that United got a little bit lucky with a few of the Refs call but, overall Liverpool just couldn't convert any of their chances into goals. They definitely outplayed Man U though.

Newcastle with a nice and controlled win over Norwich. Kind of expected that. Ben Arfa with a beautiful lobbed pass to Demba Ba. Cisse keeping up his crap form that he has had all year missing a PK. Ben Arfa should have taken it. Would have given me more Fantasy Team points as well.

Surprised to see how strong Arsenal are looking so far this year despite all the pre season hype of them being a bad team. They looked very controlled and calm playing against City. I really thought they were going to pull out 3 points after watching the beginning of the first half.

Overall a good weekend up BPL. My two teams are sitting in 1st and 9th which is pretty solid. I think Newcastle are a much stronger team that what we have seen so far. I foresee them breaking into that top 6 range for the season.

there was no problem with eto'o and messi playing together. messi was still playing on the wing then. ronaldinho, eto'o, messi was magic up front until ronaldinho decided he preferred partying over getting in shape and eto'o had a falling out with the barca higher ups. ibra didn't work because his ego was too big to allow messi to be the center of the team instead of himself. as far as i can tell messi and david villa are fine together, true, villa is much better in the center than on the wing where he normally plays now, but that's more due to how good messi is than messi being a hard player for superstars to play with.

Finally back on the winning side of things.. Although I'm still really annoyed that Cisse has been mostly dreadful this season. Good finish for Ba... Ben Arfa should have taken the penalty..

Either way, a decent win that shouldn't have been as close. NEXT...

Yea I can't wait. When I lived there for awhile I went to something like 12 matches in 14 weeks. I'm really hoping I can get the schalke ticket...its not easy though. I mean, they managed to sell out for a match against coventry

Chelsea was better team, imo. That being said, Cech made a couple of key saves that Mannone didn't have to make and Giroud can't buy a goal. Don't know what Koscielny was doing on the first goal, but Torres finished well. Ramsey had an overall sketchy game...same with that Oscar kid. I was hoping for a draw so this hurts a tad.

Nah. I think that the game was pretty much in control by Chelsea for at least half of it. It may not look like it but it seems like Chelsea is playing defenselessly then really gunning for things on breaks. So, a lot of the time they don't look like they are in charge but, they really are.

I think he probably means more at the back with David Luiz. Luiz always seems to get into things. Other than that Ivanovic and Cahill do an excellent job of being a nuisance to the opposing team and being clean at the same time.

If I were a Man U fan I wouldn't be too disappointed with a loss. Starting from last years form Tottenham seem to be an insanely tough team to beat. They look quite a bit stronger than Newcastle so far. And I think that they are usually around each other.

Don't know if anyone pays attention to Champions league but... could United have gotten an easier group? Jesus. I feel bad for Man City who will probably get knocked out just because they are in the same group as Real Madrid. Man City deserve a spot in the knockout rounds over Man U if you ask me.

Chelsea assessment. Still need to pick up the game. At the moment we are doing well off of luck. Eventually that luck will run out and it will start to go downhill all over again like last season.

Agreed. Arsenal didn't get robbed or anything.

Wasn't a particularly great game for either side I don't think, as chelsea was a bit sloppy at times, and arsenal's set piece defending was horrific.

I of course wish we won, or at least got a draw, but I'm not convinced that either would have been a fair result based on the match.

Well...maybe a draw, cech did have a few fantastic saves that many wouldn't have made. But regardless, we lost 2-1...still early though.

also for anyone who might give a shit, i managed to get my ticket to Arsenal vs fc schalke! Back to my beloved north bank. Can't wait. Might be over there alone...any london based ns'ers in here?

was actually 2 years ago, 13 matches in 14 weeks haha i was broke by the end

all arsenal home games, except 2 France games. In paris vs romania, and conveniently enough, at wembley.


I live on the east coast of the US actually. Did a study abroad program in london. (Spent almost as much time at the emirates as i did in class) and now i happen to be able to get super cheap flights/lodging, so i'm going over for a few days.
