Unlocking an american iphone outside the US

so we are in new zealand and the phone is locked to AT&T, how can we unlock it so that it will accept a vodafone NZ sim card?

Jailbreaking is great. Sadly the next ios 6.1.3 update is going to shut down the exploits that evasi0n uses to jailbreak :(
